5035 Annual Calendar

What's the verdict on the 5035J? I own a yellow gold mint version and am thinking of selling it. On the other hand however, I like the size of the watch, the busy dial and the idea of being the first AC.

Should I sell it or trade it for a 3940 or rather keep it since it has potential becoming a future classic? I mean at retail the successor goes for CHF 40k after the price increase.

Not sure I see this one becoming a future classic but only time will tell.

I don't see it becoming a future classic unfortunately. That said, it is a lovely watch and if you like it you should keep it and enjoy it! If you prefer the 3940, then by all means trade up. Perpetual calendar is superior to annual calendar in every way. The value of the latter is almost double of your watch though, so be prepared for that when trading up.

Unfortunately the 5035 does nothing for me. I'd trade up to a 3940 seven days a week and twice on Sunday. I also don't think the 5035 will do better from a value perspective than any 3940 in the long run. The latter are highly appreciated by many collectors whereas the former... Sure the first AC but a pretty PC like 3940 is superior by a country mile IMO.

Perpetuals have taken such a beating you may as well just pay a bit more and get that. Such a massive supply and Patek keeps producing year after year. 3940 is a fine watch and a “classic” if I can use a meaningless term. There are even cheaper models out there using the same movement as well.

5035 is absolutely stunning. I know, a perpetual is the cat's pajamas around here but I will disagree with the others and say the first AC ever will go down as one of the greats. Anytime I see an AC by another company I think of the 5035.

Big fan of the 5035 as well — specially one with the salmon dial. It’s a keeper

By all means, go for the 3940! No comparison between those two.

In the Patek world, the PC usually is preferred over the AC amongst collectors. Patek has been producing PC wristwatches since ~ 1920s. Patek patented and started producing ACs in the 1990s.

The 3940 has been a relative bargain pricewise since Patek produced the J version for a long time with a relatively large production number, compared to the G, R and P versions.

I have the 5035R. It wears a little bit smaller than most 37mm watches, but, I do love the finishing and I love the complication. But, it doesn't really move up in value.
