my latest interest with watches is to look for pieces that would appear to most like a simple watch that, on the surface, just tells time (and so i can see what time it is!!!) but is actually a significantly more complicated timepiece than that under the surface... this 297.026 looks mostly like an 1815 until you turn it over - but with a twist- “... a jumping sweep-seconds hand with a start-and-stop function.”

currently looking for an ALS 260.025, which would fit that category perfectly - so if you know anybody.........

Wow that is stunning. Cool concept to (watches that look simple on the surface, but are actually quite complex). No one except someone really into watches would know how complicated that piece really is.

Does anyone have a black dial timezone on a smaller wrist, about 55-58 mm wide where the bone is? Lug to lug appears to be 50mm so "I think" it would be ok, but so far all I could find online are professional photos.

Haven't posted in this thread for awhile. Still wearing my beloved 1815 AC as a daily (even though WFH)

Just wanted to share, I received a brilliant gift from my Lange sales rep for the mid-Autumn festival a couple of weeks ago. There were mooncakes and a nicely crafted display light

If you guys are around Sydney and looking into Lange, Delwyn Dass is your man, he's the Lange Boutique manager and has taken care of me with my purchase. He even arranged a tour of the Lange factory for me last year when I was in Germany.

All these pictures are stunning. I’m seriously thinking about a Lange for my next watch as I have a few milestones all coming together.

I’ve always wanted a Lange 1 (gold with champagne dial) but more recently I keep getting drawn to the gold 1815 up down. Both stunning and in normal life I’d be wearing them most days with a suit.

Any options or considerations on which one to pick?

I'm an admirer and not an owner, so take my opinion for what it's worth. I was recently at an ALS boutique and tried on both the Lange 1 Moonphase and the Up/Down. From a distance I've always preferred the Lange 1 due to the strong German design language. But after some time with both I prefer the 1815 Up/Down.

In person I'm just not a big fan of the big date complication. To be fair I'm not someone who needs a date on my watches. But it still bugs me that a manufacture of this level couldn't find a way to get the numerals of the date on the same plane in the movement, even though Glashutte Original managed. By the way, the pusher for advancing the date is like butter.

One other issue was the proportions. It's subtle, but the 1815 is slightly larger in diameter and thinner than the Lange 1 and it's variants (39mm and 8.7mm thick vs. 38.5mm and 10.0mm). It sat just a bit better on my wrist and looked more appealing in terms of the bezel thickness to dial diameter ratio. Actually the Grande Lange 1 has nice proportions as well at 40.5mm wide and 8.8mm thick, if you're okay with a bit bigger diameter.

Lastly, I like the movement design from the backside better on the 1815 Up/Down. It's pretty cool that in a watch with a power reserve as the most notable display side complication, the rear of the movement was redesigned to show off the winding mechanism gear train. In the Lange 1 it's mostly the swan neck regulator and balance wheel, and lots of beautifully finished plate/screws/jewels/chatons.

I'd love to have an 1815 Up/Down, it's on the short list. I also loved the 1815 annual calendar, but it's a bit rich for me, and I'd be getting it purely for the balanced aesthetic and moonphase.

Very, very much appreciate. What a nice detailed answer. That certainly gives me some food for thought. I can see how the slightly larger and slightly thinner dimensions may change the feel.

I think getting out to see them in the flesh will help but this is great. Either way - both stunning watches but let’s see how they feel to be in the metal.

I hope you end up with a piece you truly love. It's definitely not a brand I'd do a blind purchase on. Let's be honest, one could spend days in a boutique wearing the pieces around and chatting it up with the employees. So much variety and so many little intricacies to enjoy.

Agree on the more optimal dimensions.... in the end I just recently got my first Lange a few months ago but went with the Pt 403 Dato... I realized the grand Lange and the 1815 chrono had “better” dimensions being larger/thinner than the Dato, but loved the combo of big date, chrono and intricate movement.
