Comments about Grand Seiko

This is 1 of the 2 watches I brought with me during Thanksgiving break and posted it here on TRF; another forum member had this to say about it:

"I really don’t mean to sound rude (great collection by the way) but how on earth do you EVER choose to wear that GS over a day date?!?! Blows my mind when people have watches like a Day date and still choose to ever wear something like a GS."

Grand Seiko, you pariah!! Needless to say, I don't think he'll be coming over to the Seiko forum anytime soon...

Beautiful watch. Some people will just never get it and that’s fine. Too each their own. I can understand why some people are “married” to a brand, but for me collecting watches is about experiencing as many of the different options as possible. I own Rolex too, but in my opinion GS and many others are every bit as good. Enjoy that beauty!

I am a Rolex Bluesy owner. I like the watch, but people have some harsh comments on it ( looks like it’s from the ‘80s, schlocky, for old people, etc.)

I like it, I bought it. If they don’t like it, they don’t have to buy it.

There are many people say the finishing of Grand Seiko is comparable to Patek. So GS vs Rolex = GS better

but the brand rolex is worldwide, so people will appreciate rolex more

That's a great looking Grand Seiko. I'm a watch newbie compared to most forum members here but I can definitely appreciate the quality of GS...I look forward to owning one in the near future as soon as I can narrow down which one I want. I'm looking forward to what Grand Seiko has in store for 2020.

A great looking watch. I think Seiko/Grand Seiko for many of us is part of a journey and as you get into watches, brands, functions and the details of watches it is a road that is well worn. I think that it is somewhat funny that typically the less you know, the stronger the statements are. I see members here on TRF blasting other members and brands but typically they have just joined and their watch knowledge typically shows through. I hope to have a lot of Seiko's and Grand Seiko's in my collection as they are a favorite.

Great point. While we all have brands or watches that we'd rather not purchase or could care less about, I think most of us can at least appreciate a brand's history / heritage and understand why someone would want a specific watch, regardless of our personal thoughts about the specific watch itself.

Strong emphasis on 'any price point' , nothing compares to GS finish of dial and hands. Even PP looks 'flat' compared. And PP is anything but 'ordinary' , it's just GS is on an other planet.

Clear win for GS, turn watch around and PP takes it home. GS dials/hands are what Patek/Lange is to movement finish and decoration.

I have to admit, I once thought the same! Why on earth would I “downgrade” to a GS??
And boy was I wrong!
Some of you might have read my posts on here asking for advice about getting my first seiko, then first GS!
I’m blessed with a great rolex collection that hits every “hot” model there is but since I put GS on my wrist I have been blown away by the quality, craftsmanship, attention to details, and beauty

IMHO some of the GS models would go for $20s K if the same watch has PP or the rolex crown on it!
So for those after a great watch, details, and beauty, to me GS is up there with PP, AP and rolex but at a fraction of the price!!

Always thought Seiko should have picked another name than Grand Seiko to brand their luxury division, just like Lexus is not called Grand Toyota, that sounds a little bit silly imo.

Probably seemed a better idea 60 years ago when Grand Seiko and King Seiko were going head to head in a joint offensive to outdo the Swiss in competition for mechanical accuracy (which they achieved within a decade)

In Japan 'Lexus' does not exist. In Japan and Europe 'Acura' does not exist.
Honda's top range car is the NSX.

So it is a state of mind really.
I am very happy with my Grand Seiko's.

You can't compare a GS to brands like Rolex or Omega.
They play on an other level, the unique GS level.

Au contraire, mon frère. When Lexus was first introduced by Toyota in 1989 it was not in Japan. However, Lexus branded vehicles have been in Japan since 2005.

But anyway, I see both sides of the coin regarding Grand Seiko’s naming. It’s really a name (and brand) that true watch enthusiasts can understand and appreciate. People who automatically write off the brand solely based on its name are usually either ignorant or elitist.

That being said, I’ve been guilty of dismissing a watch based on its brand name without being educated on the brand or the watch.

Thanks for correcting me. But my point stands.
From 1989 to 2005 Lexus did not exist in Japan and honestly I never bothered to check if it had changed as I just don't care about all that 'image' stuff.

Some people hang their confidence on wearing a Rolex.
Theres so much more to the hobby than Rolex.
Not knocking them, but theres so many other great options too.

I’d say that goes for many PP and RO (though not necessarily Audemars) people nowadays too.
