Hand engraving of ref number

Hi all, I recently purchased a 7xx,xxx serial 1011 that shows very definite hand engraving of the reference # and "REGISTERED DESIGN" text between the lugs, while the serial # appears to be machine engraved. The engraving is quite sloppy -- the text is off center between the lugs, kerning is all over the place, and overall not professional looking. Would that have been something Rolex did at the time?

Rolex has stamps, they don't need to scrawl in digits with a nail.

I don’t think they would do anything like that

Well, I've seen some pretty sloppy work by Rolex, but that is definitely worse than usual. Possibly the original engraving was worn off and someone tried to re-do it.

I think this is the case. The "s" and "g" show some of the original stamping.

Engraving is original. I have a 1675 with slightly earlier serial that exhibits very similar characteristics right down to the misshaped base of the D’s.

Appears to be a very shaky hand on the pantograph machine used to engrave the cases.

Check over at VRF. I actually think might be original. There has been some really questionable engravings in the past but somehow the experts at VRF seem to validate them.

I think it's alright. I once had a Tudor Snowflake with engravings exactly like this. They were a bit sloppy with the pantographs back in the day.
