Personally, with all the doom & gloom speculation now, I would wait it out if I were trying to buy a new SS Rolex and nothing else.

I'm in Canada and am basing this off a Rolex Facebook group. 126610LNs were selling grey for $11,000 - $12,000 over MSRP. They have steadily dropped and the most recent sale I saw was around $4,500 over MSRP. That's still a hefty premium but you can see the trajectory. It should be a lot easier to get an all black Submariner as the year goes on.

This doesn’t apply to rarer pieces.
Each SS sports model brings in $50k of extra revenue - on top of the 10k for the watch itself. They're worth more than the PM models in profit.

Nothing is everlasting. Is he planning on having the same job for the next 500 years?

To "build a relationship" you buy things. How many and what value I couldn't say, but if you are willing to spend money on stuff you don't want you will get red carpet treatment, although you won't necessarily get the watch you want any quicker.

Personally I'd be running away from this AD as fast as my legs would carry me and never looking back. It sounds a bit sleazy. I hope you wiped your feet on the way out.

So weird. Building a relationship with a dealer? Do people do this for cars too? I was in an AD on Thursday, first time browsing Rolex, Tudor, and a number of other luxury watch brands. At no point did I feel obligated to form a (creepy) relationship with an employee to make a purchase.

Ferrari, Porsche, yes. Try buying something like a new Porsche GT3. You won't get anywhere.

Congratulations on being conned into thinking you need to kiss someone's ass to give them 12 grand for a steel watch.

If you really want it I recommend the reseller market.

I have had multiple visits to various ADs over the last 6 months and I am still waiting on basic requests like a datejust, etc. I have lost hope. Jewelry purchases for gifts along the way haven't helped. I am big on relationships and if one had come through, they would likely have my business for life.

While playing this silly game I have also purchased from Omega, IWC, Panerai, Seiko & Grand Seiko. Focusing on other brands for when (if?) the Rolex market comes back to reality.

There is also the vintage market which is a lot of fun.

Exactly this IMO

OP, If you have patience then you could wait it out and see, but I’d never buy anything from an AD other than the specific reference I truly wanted

Seems like you need to ask your AD this question. Not sure how anyone here could know what your AD requires.

Welcome to the forum.

I’m not expecting an incoming watch post anytime soon.

I would certainly appreciate you posting any further conversations you might have with your AD.

When an AD I’ve known for 10 years started talking about ‘unicorn’ models I realised I was done and dusted - no way I’m playing their games and l even less me buying a load of carp that I don’t want.

I also waited a full order of magnitude less than what you’d read online, from the moment of expression of interest in the model to “getting the call”.

It probably also helps that I never sell any of my watches and am not a flipper.
Good on you OP; my experience is similar to yours. I think the negative is emphasized here. Lots of good ADs out there, if you feel you're not getting a fair shake move along to find one.

Well said! They should be hungry for our money, especially in the present rather unsettled economic climate, at least here in Europe. I don´t know when all this ridiculous talk of "building a relationship" started, but imo it´s just that...ridiculous if not to say embarrassing. I would never pander to any retail business, no matter how much I wanted something. As you say, they should be "building a relationship" with us, the customers who spend hard-earned money to keep them in business!

Agree - Don't play the game as its a one-way relationship. If you want ex a Sub then go grey and enjoy it tomorrow. No reason to buy multiple watches or jewelry you don't want, in order to potentially buy the watch you desire at an unknown point in time and without any guarantees.

I head to downtown SF at 4pm on Friday and found all the stores were closed because SFPD was worried there'd be a riot. A heads up would have been nice as the store was apparently closed at 3p and I didn't have to drive there and then get stuck in the insane traffic.

Anyway long story short, my AD is dead to me!

Look at the priced in grey or secondary dealer, the real price, not the inflated price of Chrono24. Then decide if it's worth the trouble, the years of establishing a relationship. You utilize you money and time the best you are able to.

This. Worth requoting 2x.

It's the only circumstance where I'd recommend going grey, where you just want the one and then you're done.

As someone who did exactly this I also agree. However - I’m now not so sure. When I had none, I knew I only needed one so going grey was sensible. Now I have one, I find myself wondering if two might actually be better… but it’s only another one I need to buy so might as well go grey again I suppose?

I wonder what happens when I buy the next one……

This is backwards. You should get what you want FIRST, then reward the AD with any future non-watch/Rolex purchases going forward. At least that’s how I did it. I don’t mind being in a business relationship and can be very loyal, but I don’t like being forced to make the first move.
