When buying a watch, do you take resale value into consideration?

When you purchase a new watch, do you take possible resale value into consideration or do you just buy what you like?

No, absolutely not, but it’s a good data point.

I do not consider resale value but I also do not just buy what I like (purchases all tied to some achievement or milestone). If I only bought on likes, I’d have a collection far too large to mean anything to me. So I guess if I did always just buy what I like, maybe I’d consider resale more as I’d be more prone to flip my collection from time to time.

Yes. But realistically you aren’t going to loose much on Rolex, omega and even tudor so it’s a none issue.

When you start considering some Lange watches or even some pateks, mainly the comps, you need to decide wether loosing 40k is where you want to be. Some don’t care, but I do so I factor this in and either angle for a discount or buy used.

Knowing resale helps knowing what type of discount you should ask for when you buy.

No, resale value only exists in real estate.

Yes. I buy some knowing it'll be worth nothing. And I buy some knowing it will retain its value so I can upgrade to something else. Don't listen to those who say money doesn't matter. It always does. Unless you have so much you don't care.

Money definitely matters. I’m not that flippant about it, but if l like watch A, but watch B has better resale… I’m buying watch A every time.

Yes, but this is because I have more than one watch and may sell one down the road.

Buy what you like. If Rolex depreciates in value then I am sure 90% buyer would not buy a Rolex unfortunately

Yes I have a couple pieces that I’d never sell that have some sentimental value but other than those core pieces I want to be able to get in and out of stuff as I want to without taking a big bath

Yes. I will factor in a “low, worst case scenario price” in my head. As I do with cars.

Of course I do. Moreso value retention than appreciation. I like to know that something I’m paying 5 figures for won’t be worthless if I ever want to sell it. It’s like buying a piece of art or a collectible item.

No. For something like a watch, such considerations don't come into play.

It depends. Sometimes I just buy a watch I have been curious about only when I find it at a low price, knowing that if I decide to resell it I won't lose anything.

I do for sure, primarily because my taste would evolve and I may trade it in or sell it.

Having a hobby and going upside down are not mutually inclusive. Having owned and sold Omega and Tag Heuer watches prior to moving into Rolex, showed me I could purchase, wear, enjoy, and resell those watches and actually make some money, not a killing, but no loses at the end of my time with them. With Rolex (which is where I plan to stop on the horological hierarchy), I'm in a position from my previous experiences with Omega and Tag Heuer to maybe even lose some money on a few of my current Rolex models, if I have an opportunity to get into a more desirable (to me) model in the near term future.

I've done the same thing with firearms. For me, that made both hobbies even more enjoyable. How could I go wrong? Like most people, I, too, have obligations (financial and otherwise) and as such, it's nice to know I'm not compromising my future. I'm also not saying everyone in the hobby is compromising their future, but for me to go any other route, would be irresponsible. This way I'm able to own multiple watches versus 1 or 2. Everybody is different, but this works for me.

No. I buy a watch because I want it and it fills a need for me. I need a dress watch (Citizen Eco Drive) for Sunday Church, etc. I need a daily wear watch (Tudor Submariner). I need a yard work and exercise watch (Casio Illuminator).

I'm not a collector nor speculator on watches. I buy what I like to fill a need as provided above.

I never think about a "resale value", as I'm not a merchant, but in the same time I never purchase a costly watch, which hasn't got good value retention.

If I’m being totally honest yes, it’s one factor to consider for me.

I think it’s naive not to think about what a 5 or six figure watch might be worth down the road before you’re buying it.

That said, if you’re in the position that you don’t care … as it it could be worth nothing, well good for you.
