I don't , I never plan to sell. I think of it as once I hand the money over for a watch, I consider it gone. So my answer is a definite No.

No...when I bought my Day Date, I bought it because I loved it & wanted to wear it for the rest of my life...HOWEVER, I have let my wife know if I died 1st & she wanted the $$$$ to contact DavidSW to sell it. I have also said she could pass it on to my younger brother or nephew..we have no children & I don't see our cat wearing it!

Hate to admit it

I do on occasion.

I try not to purchase anything I’ll lose big on. I’m willing to lose a little on anew watch. If it’s an expensive purchase and I’m fearful of losing a lot I go pre owned. Like a car I figure the first owner takes most of the hit. I don’t buy to make, but I hope not to lose (a lot).

Of course I do. That doesn't mean I won't purchase a watch I like but its always in the back of my mind, at least the last 15-20 years, about if I have to sell, will this watch hold its value

No, I don’t sell any of my watches ever anyway.
It’s normal that anything you buy will depreciate very fast.
Cars, watches, shoes, clothing. Never a concern

Never. I have a hard time letting go of things. I only buy them to celebrate some achievement.

These days it's little more than a passing thought as part of a sound exit strategy and I ultimately only buy what I like as the prime consideration.

I didn’t used to but hard not to have it at least creep into your mind even a little after the past few years. I wouldn’t use resale value as a reason to buy or not buy a watch, there’s no telling what will happen in the future. And odds are if I did need to raise cash it would be when the resale market is down the tubes.

As has been said previously, not a primary factor but certainly a data point where I have awareness. One of the secondary benefits with Rolex is knowing it retains value extremely well could give one some peace of mind.

Yes, unless it is an absurd one of a kind or rare piece.

Like if I want a Wristmon, well there’s not a lot of competition.

Some pieces are so unique they’re worth the hit.

When you start considering some Lange watches or even some pateks, mainly the comps, you need to decide wether loosing 40k is where you want to be. Some don’t care, but I do so I factor this in and either angle for a discount or buy used.

Which Patek?? Everyone I’ve seen trades for way more than retail? Unless you are referring to some ladies pieces

It is nice to know for some watches over a certain value that they retain some value. Some much more than others. An easily available Omega you need to bank on it losing 50%

Of course. If resale is low, i simply buy grey.

Why pay more than i have to for the same product?

I bought a seamaster brand new years ago for 2.5K on Jomashop. It was $4400 new from Omega.

Years later, i sold it locally for 2.4k. Same watch, and i lost $100 and wore it for 2 years instead of losing $1600.

On the other end of the spectrum, if i am paying a *premium* for a watch that i can't get at retail (as i often do) then i don't care if it goes up or down; i got the watch i wanted at a price i was willing to pay.

I consider it, but it does not affect my decision.

I don't think about the flip or profit value, I just think about if I get tired of it.

No, watch collection is a hobby.....I consider every watch that I bought or trade as a sunk cost in my pocket, it is part of the fun

Although I never consider selling the watch when purchasing it, I do consider the value retention aspect as one of the factors.

Resale is a huge factor for me in deciding whether to buy new or used, but not a factor in watch selection itself.

5204 the previous white dial was listed for 100k below RRP a few months ago
5327
5236 is on the way
52701 R
Some 5270g configs
5520
Even the simple annual calendar 5386 trades under retail but the loss is less than 6k so not too bad

Given the resale value for Rolex are generally higher than the retail value, it is hard not to think about the resale value. I have no intention to sell them, but when I am offered by the AD to be on a list of a certain dial of Datejust / Daytona, etc., and I am indifferent to some of the dials offered, then I would consider the higher resell value dials.

Recently, I am on a list for a Batman, but with some additional spending I made with the AD, the SA suggested that I can switch to a Pepsi, with high certainty, so I made the switch. I have no preference between the Batman and the Pepsi, but considering the resell value, I would get the Pepsi.

I do. And genuinely don't believe anyone who says they don't.

If you knew the $20k watch you purchased would be worth zero tomorrow you'd never buy it unless you had insane levels of wealth.

Likewise, I don't think many of us would spend as much as we do on Rolex if we didn't know how well they hold their value.

For me…no. Not with hobbies such as watches and cars. I buy what I like, or want to try in my lifetime. I’m fortunate to have been able to do so, but admittedly…it is an expensive way to go about my particular passions/hobbies.
Although….I will say, the latest purchase of the PT Daytona, I definitely was thinking about what will happen in March if this model is discontinued or the Daytona lineup is altered size wise, dial wise, etc….
