My GMT story

This is going to be a somewhat long story, so here goes. It was 12/1/22, and my wife and I had somehow been invited to a special yearly event at our local Rolex AD….

We had been to the AD multiple times since early July, looking at jewelry and watches. We had upgraded her wedding set, bought her a couple other small pieces of jewelry and had established a pretty good relationship with our SA. She had put me down as interested in a GMT Pepsi or a Sub LV, with probably little luck of getting either. I knew how hard it was to get these pieces and didn’t hold out much hope.

While at the event I picked up a Tudor BB Pro and bought my wife another ring for Christmas. There were several big spenders at the event and I struck up a conversation with a gentleman that was wearing a white Daytona. It was the first time I had seen one in person and I was blown away. I had never wanted a Daytona before, but now couldn’t stop thinking about it. On the 21st I text my SA and asked if she would keep me in mind if they had a Christmas miracle white Daytona come in. She was very nice and said she had already added it to my list after seeing me looking at it during the event.

About 2 hours later she text back and asked when I wanted to pick up the watch. Confused I asked which watch she was talking about. She said it was “the watch”, that they had just got one in. I told her not to tease me, she said she was working hard to get it for me and would text me tomorrow. I tried to put it out of my mind, but had a pretty restless night. The next day she text back and said she had just seen “the watch” and after an extended conversation with the manager, it was mine. I was blown away and called my wife with the news. My wife was a little less convinced I was getting a Daytona and said I should have her send me a picture before driving back. (it’s about a 2hr drive to the AD) I text back and told her I just wanted to confirm it was “the Daytona”. After a long pause, she text that it was an OP and after checking their records they had text the wrong person…

I was crushed!! I knew it was too good to be true,
but thought maybe, somehow, it could be a miracle. After joking with her for a while and making her feel pretty bad, I told her accidents happen and I would probably live. She was very apologetic and said she would make it up to me when Rolex started shipping watches again, after their Christmas break.

1/24/23 I got a text that she had a surprise for me. It wasn’t a Daytona, but the next best thing. After confirming she was texting the right person this time, I quickly drove to the AD. Here is what was waiting for me….

Congrats!! The next best thing? We can argue that and in some ways the best thing. I have both and love them equally, your Pepsi is no consolation prize. Enjoy your awesome GMT and welcome to The Club!!

Congrats

Would still love the Daytona, but I’m sure it’ll take awhile. Maybe the sub LV next. I have a SD4K that I bought in 2019 as a first retirement present to myself. I might still have a little leverage and will try to use it to my advantage….

Great story! Every dark cloud has a silver (in this case red/blue) lining. Congrats. I too hope to join the club . . .

Congrats, it’s a great reference.

It’s not a backseat model to the Daytona imo. I have both as well, and the GMT gets more wrist time.

Awesome! Would rather have that than a Daytona anyway. It has a useful complication at least.

Congrats OP! Great story!

(I'm pretty sure my AD has a BLNR for me but they just sold it to the wrong person! )
