Looking into getting a speedmaster.

Hi all
I’ve got a Rolex sub which I love and am now looking into getting a Speedmaster moon watch.
I’m not familiar with the Omega range quite like the speedmaster but is it to similar to my sub ?
Is there a special 50 year since moon landing aniversary model due out maybe or should I just get one now.
Grateful to hear any advice.

Omega do a ‘special’ ‘limited edition’ every other month! Just get the standard hesalite Speedmaster Professional. You really can’t go wrong. Are you after a new or pre-owned one?

There are a multitude of speedmaster iterations. Fortunately for you omega doesn’t suffer from a lack of stock, so you can try most before you buy at an AD. I would not suggest buying one new as pre owned Omegas can be had substantially less than retail.

Indeed, if anyone is interested I’m thinking of selling mine. 2016 Hesalite Professional in mint condition for 2500.

The "standard" Speedmaster Professional is reference 311.30.42.30.01.005

I recommend beginning by looking at this watch. It's the one others here mention as the "Hesalite" model, which is Omega's name for the acrylic crystal over the dial. This reference is for the watch on the steel bracelet (you can have it w/o bracelet and on an alligator strap/deployant if you prefer), and it has a hand-wound movement and a solid steel case-back (with a soft-iron dust cover that serves as part of the Faraday Cage shielding the movement from magnetic fields).

The closest variant is reference 311.30.42.30.01.006, which is on the steel bracelet with a sapphire crystal over the dial, and also a sapphire crystal in a display case-back. It's nicknamed the "Sapphire Sandwich".

Most Speedmaster owners buy the watch on its steel bracelet, and then choose straps for different moods; the Speedmaster dresses up or down easily on different sorts of straps.

With that said, if there is an "LE" that speaks to you, definitely consider it - just don't buy it on speculation. Buy what you truly want. Watches are not investments.

I think the Speedmaster is most certainly different enough from a Submariner. Yes, they are both steel watches on steel bracelets with black faces and white markers, but the similarities end there. One is an automatic diver meant for water while the other is a manual chronograph meant for land (or space).

As far as which version to get, I'd just get the standard Speedmaster or the sapphire sandwich version if you want to admire the lovely manual movement and want the modern durability of a sapphire crystal.

i dont think the limited editions are worth buying....every now and then, there is a commemoration of some landing...u have the apollo 1,2,3 on and on.... coupled with 30th, 40th, 50th anniversaries stuffs... all sorts of permutation to milk the customer dry...

To add on, you have all sorts of "sides of the moon".....the dark, the black, the white, the grey, the pink....just amazing how omega can come up with anything and everything for limited editions.

I also have a Rolex sub date reference 16610 and wanted to get a Speedmaster. As others have noted you can't go wrong with a professional moonwatch in hesalite.

However, I ended up getting a Speedmaster 3876.50.31 which is a professional with moonphase and date added at the 12:00 dial. It also has a sapphire crystal and exhibition case back. It's a awesome watch and I love it.

Please be warned that additional watches may add to your addiction. A week after getting the Speedy I added a Panerai. Now I spend too much time on watch forums thinking about my next purchase.

I'm thinking of getting a Moonwatch too. I've seen photos of it on a curved-end leather strap with deployant. It's beautiful but I've been told it's quite expensive to buy this strap from the AD.

Any suggestions for a third party, curved end straps for the Speedmaster Moonwatch?

If you go online - can get a brand new standard hesalite Speedmaster Professional sub £3k - just.

Also noticed watches of Switzerland doing 0% over 4 years last year if that’s of interest although suspect you’ll pay full rrp

I have the traditional speedy pro hesilite and it gets more wrist time than my Daytona. Though it has the same black/silver configuration as the sub, they are quite different and I love having a hand wound piece in the rotation.

I think so, but then I'm less of a collector than I am a watch enthusiast who enjoys having a couple or three nice watches to choose from on any given day, so for me this wouldn't make sense.
