Is It A Waste of $ to Own a Datejust and Day Date?

I just ordered a Stainless Date Just w/WG Fluted Bezel on Jubilee Band. Would it be crazy to have that watch, AND a Day Date??

It's a waste to own more than one watch; so what? Many own both.

Just 2? They'll be lonely!

You need a few more to keep them company... how about a Yachtmaster!

Then something sporty, with a fiddle bezel. Never know when you wanna lie on a beach.

Watch a race? Maybe a chronograph if ever you need a stopwatch.

How about a Milgauss & AirKing too?

Now you need a watch winder...

Is it a waste of money to own anything fancier than a G-shock?

Yes and No. 100% each way. :)

The question is whether you will actually wear (and hence enjoy) both. In my experience, with very similar watches, you will naturally gravitate to one over the other most of the time, unless you buy them with specifically different uses in mind.

Perhaps Datejust for short sleeves, casual outings, mild sports e.g. hiking, etc. and DD for office, formal, travel, etc. I don’t know....my 16233 gets ZERO wrist time since adding a DD40. Therefore in hindsight I would likely go for one, not both, but purely a personal decision.

Any Rolex is expensive compared to most watches but bugger all in the greater scheme of things.

Buy it and forget it. If the cost worries you, buy a Casio and then you will not need to worry.

And the wife said "Are you crazy? You already have a gold Rolex!". One has to be a tad nuts to buy one of these watches much less several.

It's a better obsession than young blondes, fast horses, or big boats. Be smart about what you buy. Don't spend the retirement money. And enjoy the rare experience of wearing a fine timepiece.

I think that the DJ and the DD are different enough to exist in a collection.

Agree. Get the DD40 and also get a DJ41 in SS.

Perfect combo. You can wear the DJ on more of a daily basis. When you want to be a baller wear the DD.

Is It A Waste of $ to Own a Datejust and Day Date?

As to the OPs question, once you have multiple Rolex models your brain & muscle memory kick in after a while...ever notice how you take a quick glance before writing a check or dating a form?

So here's my theory, once you have a DJ while young, it's easy for the brain to forget keeping track of the date - because your wrist always knows the date. As you get older, you need a DD because you'll lose track of what day of the week it is, too....

I do too...but as a DD40 owner, there are a lot of other watches ahead of the DJ that I want, with the DD filling that niche so very nicely.

So many watches...

Or if you will only wear one of them. You'll figure it out, sometimes we don't know what has to go or stay until the new one challenges it.

I was concerned that I'd never wear my DJ after getting a DD. Didn't happen, I wear both at different times and they each have a different look.

As for the deep philosophical stuff, I won't touch that. Too many good replies already. In my case, it's better for me to buy a watch or Rolex that I absolutely do not need than to spend the money on more poison for my beleaguered liver.

I really like the new DJ with roman numerals on a jubilee bracelet- 36 with the hidden crown clasp. Either SS, or TT. For me, the romans look great on a DJ - they fit nicely on the dial. For me, romans on a DD are not my fav because one and eleven are the same I - something that I never warmed up to, but beautiful none-the-less. I love the stick markers or factory diamond markers on the DD.

So YG DD and SS or TT DJ with romans seems like a nice pairing. Don't forget to enjoy the time wearing both. Somewhere there is a joke about this - something like...husband wearing a DJ says he wants to buy a DD and the wife asks why, he says it's complicated...

I wouldn't call it a waste of money - they're both fantastic watches. But it's certainly not the most interesting way to start a collection.

(As in variety, folks, put the pitchforks away).

Of course not. They are both luxury items. No justification necessary. Life is tricky enough for most of us, without having to justify indulging in our passion for watches. I have two Oyster Perpetual 34mm models, bought within a month of each other, and may get a third. So what?
