Finally! Found my Sea-Dweller 16660!

It was a long journey of nearly a year and I've finally found the perfect Sea-Dweller 16660 (for me!).

Didn't go matte dial then. Is this a later gloss dial?

I already own a great 5512 so water a gloss dial but still vintage to mix them up.

Great SD to have either way, I'll look to flip my 16600 for a 16660 next year, but I want the matte dial really as my 16600 has lug holes so the swap won't satisfy me I think. Mines away getting a clean and refinish at the moment and I'm starting to miss it.
Have fun wearing yours.

I was looking at a matte dial 16660 today and was told it is a 'transitional' model. It is very nice and looked very different to a later 16600 (1998) SD but, appart from the dial, are there any differences?

Thanks

Transitional simply means there's a mix of old and new.

Movement is basically the same, but an earlier iteration in the 16660. The other big difference is that the 16660 has an open date wheel with a more classic font. Tritium plots, hands, and pip so you can get some patina.

Thanks for this, what is an open date wheel? Do you mean that the date hole is bigger?

Thanaks

Open date should refer to the fact that numbers that include 6 and 9's are not closed. Open 6s and open 9's or open date wheel.

No. One that has open 6 and 9 numerals. Like this one...

Ahh, thanks for that.

I know that different people think different things are collectable, but is a 16660 'Transitional' with a matte dial that rare that it is sold for a premium over a 16600?

Yes. A gloss 16660 is 5-6K USD. A matte would be 8-10K.

The dials are as rare as hens teeth. My gloss 16660 has a serial that would have been matte originally and it has been impossible to find a dial for it.

That would explain the asking price then.

Thanks again.
