Leaving your watch at grey dealer
Hi all,
Im thinking to trade in my DJII at a grey dealer. The DJ has a chipped bezel and crown because I dropped them months ago. The dealer said they can take it for a trade in, but before they can seal the deal and come up with a proper offer for the watch, they need to send it to their watch technician so they can determine how big is the damage and figure out how to polish the bezel etc, and they need around 5-7 days for this. The dealer basically leave it up to me and ask if I'm confident enough to leave my watch with them. So my question is basically what things should I take note before I leave my watch with them incase they're going to swap it etc with maybe a fake one. I do read on another forum that some people dealt with this particular grey dealer before and no problem. But you know, better be safe then sorry .. |

If you have this worry I probably would not leave it there. Ask them for a way to be there when they value or for you to take it to the technician.

Leaving your watch at grey dealer
I believe you already have questions about trusting this dealer, so no - I wouldn’t leave it with them. You are not going to like the valuation either way methinks. IMHO: Sell it yourself and find the same watch you’d be trading for.
Also, the story is a ruse I believe. In that time they can post your watch for sale to get it sold even with the imperfections. Then offer you the low-ball trade-in value which they will do inevitably. Also...2nd thought: They know how to share a couple of pictures to their centralized watchmaker to get an estimate. Letting them ship the watch to and from him just introduces more risk of damage or loss. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes of course, I’m sure they will resell it more than the offered price but they have the watch that I want, an omega speedy apollo 11, so I’m hoping I can make a deal with them. Because I mentioned that I only will grab the speedy if I can sell the DJ with a good price. I do have a friend that interested to buy but he offer to do a monthly payment, maybe anothee way to go .. Or better still, send it to RSC so she is 'as new just serviced with new warranty card/2 year warranty)... sell it here because odds are the grey is going to give you less as they need to resell it.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I might try my luck selling it here in the forum.

Mr P, why wouldn't you take it to Tong Building and have them check it out?

On another note, what do you guys think buying a watch with this condition? Assuming this is the model you guys want and the price is lower from other same type 2nd hand watches. |

If you have doubts take it to the RSC for piece of mind, you will get it serviced with the new service warranty. You could then ask for more and sell it quicker.
Some buyers may be willing to buy it in that condition and then get it repaired by themselves. You have options. |

Many people leave their watches with the grey dealer to be sold as consignment, so I believe you dont have to worry about dealer swaping parts as they may not do that if the seller is a reputed one.. but you may get a low ball offer..
Who is your grey dealer? |

If I were buying a watch in that condition my offer would be reduced by the cost of service, maybe more. It just shifts the cost from you to me, so the sale price will be adjusted accordingly. If you are going to sell this watch on TRF, with a low post count and no sales history, you are going to need something to offer the seller.

I think I will take this to RSC first and see what they have to say. If the repairs are still in my budget since I don't think the warranty will cover a miss-handling of a watch, will consider to repair it then. And maybe will get a good price to resell or consign the watch to a dealer.
Now Im thinking to get BLNR instead, so might find a dealer with BLNR in stock and do a deal with them. |
