Explorer II

What, if any, are the differences between a newer 40 MM and a new 42 MM Explorer II? Are there any mechanical differences or improvements other than size?

The Explorer line are the two watches that have been fitted with their own unique movements in the new upgrades..

The Explorer 39 sports a unique 3132 movement

The Explorer II 42 is fitted with the 3187.

As mentioned, both of these use both the Parachrom and the Paraflex Shock system that Rolex has patented, so are movements where all parts of the movement are made in-house. These movements, I am told, are physically larger and will not fit in previous models..

Larry - has Rolex released any technical specs on the 3187 regarding it's shock resistance? I have noticed other brands routinely quoting the amount of "G's" their watch can withstand...

All this is true: but the 'old' movement of the 40mm ex2 will suit you for many years, as it suited me and many, many others! (As it has in all those GMT's)
These movements are extremely durable and precise!
Go with whatever you like!
Good luck

Thanks very much. Let me ask you. Personally, would you pay a slight premium over list price for a new in box 40mm white Explorer II (NOS) or would you go through the used market?

You didn't ask me, but I will answer..

I wouldn't pay a premium at all for a new 16570. There is simply no reason to pay a premium when there are likely some available at MSRP.

As to the used market, that's always a personal choice. I'm always ready to buy a top condition Explorer II at the right price..

Those two Explorers have the EXACT same time.
