Hacking the 324 movement. Will this hurt the watch?

A random video popped up while I was on YouTube and the guy showed a way to hack the seconds hand on his Aquanaut 5167. Just thought it was interesting more than anything else since have seen so many haters complain about the lack of this feature.

I'm not very knowledgeable at all when it comes to watch mechanics so honestly have no idea if this is harmful, common knowledge, or unique to this movement.

Anyway thought I would share for any opinions about this "hacking" work around.

It's not harmful at all. I've done it with the 324 movement on many Pateks.

PP says it's not harmful and they should know even though it seems counter-intuitive. Have to set my old Speedy's running seconds hand the same way if I don't want to run the chrono constantly.

Think it will be fine, but not something I do often.

Can you direct us to where PP has stated this practice when done on regular basis will not hurt the watch? I have never seen it.

Thanks,
Bob

Very true. Confirmed with Patek. I do this with all my 240 mvmts.

Yes

if done regularly. Think for a minute, the movement was not designed for this motion. What else do you need to know?

If Patek wanted a hacking feature, they could easily have added it. Jamming the movement backwards is not what they would design or recommend. Turning the minute hands backwards excessively is not recommended if you read the watch manuals from older vintage pieces. It is sad the 240 and 324 have not been upgraded with a hacking mechanism as is found on almost all other high end watches today. I am reminded of the Lange Up and Down, it resets to zero when it winds down. The Perpetual calendar from them resets to zero when the crown is pulled out. I do not have a watch other than PP which does not have a stop seconds.

I've done it two or three times when I received my 5167 but I'm with SL Brabus: not worth it...I'm also enjoying my 3700 without second hand and never had any problem for a few seconds... ;-)
