Patek Philippe Calatrava 5196G on my mind

I went to Tiffany & Co to view a 5196G today. Wow! Such a simple, beautiful, elegant watch. I wasn't totally sold on the Tiffany & Co stamp, so I am still trying to decide if I should purchase this one or go through a local AD that I would like to establish a continuing relationship with. Any 5196 lovers out there?

I’m pretty sure Govberg carries it. Here is their website- www.wearecrooks.com

Just depends on if you love the dial with the stamp.

In all seriousness skip the stamp. Not worth the premium. Especially on a production piece. If limited edition- maybe...

I am definitely leaning toward getting one without the stamp.

Who tacks on a higher premium? Tiffanys or Govberg?

What if you bought a Tiffany stamped watch from Govberg?

I definitely recommend the 5196g, it's a modern rendition of the classic calatrava!

I inquired about this with Govberg directly. They said they had a regular production 5196 in stock, previously owned by a Tiffany. Claimed this made it LE as it was still 'Tiffany stamped' and wanted $50k. Sounds legit.

I used to know a girl named Tiffany. Tiffany Govberg. I think her dad is in jail.

Yep, $22,000, which I believe is list. I am not sure what my local AD can offer as far as price. I imagine I can save 3% by funding the purchase with cash, check, or bank transfer. Do ADs typically discount Calatrava models? 5%-10%?

I’ve never shopped for this watch but 10-15% should not be unreasonable.

i honestly like the stamping on this piece, with it falling within the subdial. I dont like it on the 5296 but love it on the 5396 within the complication. I also like it on the 5164 nestled right under "geneve". There are obviously less stamped models, it just depends on if you want the exclusivity for 2k

Patek Philippe Calatrava 5196G on my mind

Love the simplicity and beauty of the 5196. It’s the perfect looking dial.

I know I sound like a broken record but they need to make this piece in a 42mm case. Talk about attracting a younger clientele.

Limiting factor is the need to develop a new manual wind movement other than the cal 215. It's a great movement don't get me wrong, but it was designed for a 31mm case and you can already see what happens when they use it for the current 37mm version.

Technical issues aside, I think the dress watch segment is better served in sizes less than 40mm, but that's just my opinion of course.

Ehhhh I could see a 38-39mm with a larger movement to match.....however 42mm is much too large for this watch with all the empty space. It's a dress piece, not a sport model.

Edit*- just saw Tony's post, agree on all counts

Beautiful watch. Dear Patek, please never even consider enlarging this model beyond 38 or 39 mm max (and even in that case, a full new movement would be required).

I have been shopping for the exact same reference. My AD offered it to me for $18,500 so you defintely should not need to pay list price.

All the same negative comments about the 5522 and 5524. Watch too big, movement too small. This piece would sell like hot cakes in a larder size. I know I’m in the minority and that’s ok but I’m right. :)

That's good to hear! I am going to speak to my AD this afternoon.

At first, I feared the current 37mm would be too large for a classic dress watch. That said, I was pleasantly surprised when I tried on the watch and found it to be a good match for my 17.5 cm wrist. For someone with traditionalist tendencies and isn't interested in owning vintage watches, the current 5196 appears to be somewhat ideal. I imagine there's an audience for a larger version as well.

But thats a sport/pilot watch that *should* be and historically *was* bigger........this is a dress piece...

JLC made their Master Ultra Thin Small Seconds (a fairly identical watch to the 5196) in 38.5mm and 40mm. I've seen both/put both on the wrist. The 40mm just looks out of proportion, and an even larger 42mm would look clownish IMO. It's just too much space for what it is. Plus, lighter dials give the illusion that they're bigger than their darker counterparts.

I understand the hirstorical nature of sizes. However look at every single 42mm Watch put out by Patek recently- each one a smashing success.

5522
5524
5905
5168

You want a younger crowd- bring more 42mm watches to the market.

I have had many cordial, professional and fair transactions with Govberg, including the purchase of a Patek Calatrava. I wonder if all the naysayers have had a bad personal experience with them.

....all sporty pieces....

I believe the masses (even younger 'watch' guys) agree that a dress piece should never be the same size as his sport watch.

but hey, we can both have our opinion. Patek drops a 42mm basic Calatrava and it sells out, I'll eat my words.
