Is Jose’s work factual? I have no clue really. I suppose it’s for the reader to interpret his “facts”.

I can think of a Rolex story … something to do with a guy that climbed a big hill with an Explorer, or did he, that’s been debated to death

Me personally, I get as much or enjoyment out of wearing my Panerai as any other brand.

Thank you for your usual level-headed voice of reason, Brian.

After several of these recent threads, I clearly got a bit worked up!!

Sorry again to anyone I might have annoyed. I love my 164, but not necessarily the “brand” Panerai. And I also seem to have a pet peeve of not labeling something a “fact” when it isn’t a “fact”. ;-)

I will work to remember that these are just internet posts about watches…. And on the internet, one can almost never convince anyone else about anything (no matter how right one thinks one is ).

Have a feeling that's where many Paneristi are today. After muuuuch thought decided to ignore anything Panerai pre-1997-ish or thereabouts as that has nothing to do with today's Richemont ownership.

Basically, imho, simply look at Panerai as a marketable brand within the Richemont conglomerate. i believe we can all agree Panerai today has nothing to do with Panerai's history (other than dial type and case shape). So if you like one of the newly made Panerai fashion watches and feel it is priced ok, buy it. If not, there are an abundance of other brands with an excellent history that is still part of the company owners today.

It does seem that vintage Panerai are getting more attention from collectors if that helps you decide OP. A proper screw-back 300m WP stainless steel time and date Panerai with seconds hand at 9pm is around $5000.

Is there evidence Panerai was actually used by the Italian Navy?

Same my friend I’m as passionate about the Panerai as anyone, just tire of the debate. It is what it is I guess.

You’re 164 is as beautiful as my fashion watch 690

Well said and agree.

Have a PAM SS 01033 GMT (bought bracelet too), the 1118 TRON, and waiting on the 42mm Bronzo to arrive. Then the 'trilogy' will be done with and can thankfully more on to other brands

Modern Panerai is without a doubt an 'interesting' brand. Always fun seeing what craziness will pop out of their PR department next, incorrect info, bad webmastering and all.

The era of late 90s and early 2000s was still the peak of interest in Panerai. I have a few pieces from that era and will keep them. The “new” Panerai after this initial period isn’t to my personal liking. I don’t appreciate how they’ve molded facts to suite a marketing narrative. In some case downright lies. Nevertheless, the brand is cool and I still love my Fiddy, 111, 687 and Bronzo. I have no doubt that it’ll all come full circle over time and Panerai will return to its former glory.
