Very good question, and I would like to know the answer too.

Seeing that chamfer begins and ends with varying width; suggests it is executed by hand? Not every mid casing has the same chamfer for each reference...

Later serials, "K" and forward a few more, saw a very constant width indicative of "machine cut" chamfer...

And then came the Supercased mid casings and chamfer was lost to wider pronounced lugs; only to be re-born in some of the Tudor offerings...

Hmpf...

Modern watches are made on a cnc mill so the bevel can have a varying width. I expect it would require a 5 axis cnc mill. Usually a chamfer mill is used but can be done with other types of end mills as well.

Pre-cnc (pre-1980s?) No clue. Ive always been impressed by the type of things that were mass produced without the use of computers.
