I like Mr. Stern's gentle professional demeanor when he explains the thoughts behind each new model.

From 12:30 mark in the video, Mr. Stern honestly reveals that their internal opinion about 5212A's dial was initially like 50/50. It's quite different from Mr. François-Henry Bennahmias, who claimed that CODE11.59 was a masterpiece but people just didn't understand.

Good to hear from him that Patek will never be for sale.

Mr. Thierry Stern introduces Baselworld2019 Models

I appreciate the link to the interview.

I am still trying to wipe off the fawning sycophantic drool, though.

Very good information and I have but one question about the new Calatrava with the weeks on the dial.

Where did PP get the idea that there are 53 weeks in a year? See my red circle on the bottom pic below...

This Hodinkee article says:

"A feature of the standard is that occasionally a year will contain 53 rather than 52 weeks, which is accounted for in the calendar mechanism and numbering scheme on the dial (the typography, according to Patek, is unique and is based on the handwriting of one of the watch designers)."

Mr. Thierry Stern introduces Baselworld2019 Models

Thanks for the info.

Found a couple of references in real life while Googling...

From financial world:
The weeks of the year in a Gregorian calendar are numbered from week 1 to week 52 or 53, depending on several varying factors. Most years have 52 weeks, but if the year starts on a Thursday or is a leap year that starts on a Wednesday, that particular year will have 53 numbered weeks.

From advertising world:
In 2017, 4th quarter had 14 weeks with October and December each being 5 weeks long. The year began on Monday December 26, 2016 and ended on Sunday December 31, 2017. Additional years where there will be 53 weeks include 2023, 2028 and 2034. So beware, those broadcast calendars will have an extra week.

Makes me wonder...
With different “week counting” methodologies - and the movement’s method being fixed - I wonder if an owner will need to adjust the movement every 5 years or so to reset the week count.

Stern did give an explanation on why he directed development of that model. People tell him things in terms of week # of the year and he would glance at his phone to see when that was in terms of a date.

Thanks for the link. Great interview.

i am loving the 5212A more and more to be honest.

Living in Scandinavia (and even if you're in some other European countries that deal with Germany) wekk numbers are used all the time.

Why? I have no idea because everyone reacts exactly how Thierry does. "Week X? What date is that?!"
I find it funny that most Swede's will defend the use of week numbers, even though they have no idea which dates they are and land up asking for the date anyway.

Wei Koh flexing on the Patek history to TS Good interview, would of been interesting to see him elaborate more on the subdials being below the centre line of the dial.

I guess the owner has to do some (delightful) work of adjusting it often. It's not a perpetual calendar and not even an annual calendar.

The retail world relies heavily on the NRF 4-5-4 calendar with a 53rd week every 5-6 years. They publish some helpful FAQ's here: https://nrf.com/resources/4-5-4-calendar

Great video. Thoroughly enjoyable. His risk taking with the pilot is paying off. I hope the same for the 5212. Looking forward to seeing one in person.

that's the one I wanted to hear more about too. Why WG instead of SS? Already have blue in WG and the original green was in SS. Why not discontinue the blue anniversary rather than having two 42.2mm basic 3 hand 5168gs?

A nice interview. Where are the Revolution Watch folks based? I like how the girl kept playing/fussing with her hair...which distracted me from Stern's occasional banging of his watch on the table. Is there a premium for PP-generated desk dings?

Good catch and far reaching conclusion... More likely no ring as it would just distract from the watch? Worse, scratch it? Lol...

Seriously, I cannot remember him wearing a ring ever. His pic w your daughter is one example as far as I can see.
