RG Audemars are a dime a dozen, whereas Titanium features much less, which with the ROO being a relatively bulky piece means you’re better off with less weight rather than more.

As for buying pre-owned, Lange can refinish the watch for you, so don’t let a few scuff marks put you off one at the right price.

Makes the 44s (which I'm currently eyeing) a much better match. But that's me.
The Datograph is very tall for its width. I would not call it a dress watch.

I would keep the RG and trade up the Ti for an 1815 Chrono if I were in your position. Would not give up those two for a Datograph. I would not want to keep both though as this is massively redundant IMO.

Idk if I'd go so far to say RG audemars is a dime a dozen. I've seen maybe one in the wild in my whole life.

And the titanium is being produced more than any other......

I do like the larger size of the dato as well.

That new 1815 chronograph though is super nice and in a world where the dato didn't exist that would be my favorite ALS.
In a world where the dato does exist and I don't like ALS at all, I like this one .

On the forums they are everywhere but the only AP's i have ever seen IRL were a YG ROC blue dial once at heathrow and a silver 15300 at my son's school on one of the parents. Ive seen a couple of obvious fakes around too.

I saw a Lange once in a restaurant one time too.

We do get a skewed perception sometimes looking at watch pics all day.

You must post an incoming thread with copious pics!

Gotcha. For me the added heft of the Dato is a real negative. But then I have a smaller wrist.

I also am in the fence about the date. Yes, it's signature ALS, but the two digits are not on the same plane (Glashutte Original do that) and then there's the blank space for the first 9 days of the month. It's certainly a cleaner dial sans date.

The Dato is the flagship model, but there are 3 reasons for me, at least, that put the 1815 on top. And that's outside the $$$ difference.

Have you tried on both at the same time?

I've never seen an AP in the wild, let alone an 44RG, but then being quite poor I don't get out much...

No one is keeping you from a grail, you asked an opinion. But we all know what opinions are like--do what you like

This thread inspired me to order one also. Who'da thunk an AP forum could have that effect?

I mentioned not being a huge fan of the galvanised rotor on my thread and that turned into a Dato thread and then we have this thread and now serious talk of the 1815, which does look really good in black and had me reading the Hodinkee article again.

it is a great watch. I love it, just love a dato more. I would happily take an 1815 chono in a second though. Ive seen the old dial version (which i think is discontinued now) just not the new black one.

I looked at all three black dials again and my heart is with the original Dato. That would be the one for me. I might look into it next year if nothing new comes out. As it is quite small and thick I think I would have a custom made thick leather strap on it to balance it out. Mind you I do say this nearly every year...

its the romans on the original dato that don't of it for me. Plus i like the up/down. But thats just me. I do hope you get the original one since its your preferred. That would make a killer addition to your collection.

Most of the ALS owners don't seem to be as active so there are not a ton of pics besides an incoming here and there.

A bit OT, but what does that button at 10 o'clock do on the Dato?

On topic, if you have another colored metal watch, I would trade the RG ROO plus cash for the Dato, but keep the Ti.

That Lange is very, very special.

i don't have another PM watch, but that would probably be the best scenario and keep the Ti 44.

anyone know what buckle is supposed to come on the Dato currently? I thought i read somewhere that it use to be a tang but is now supposed to be a deployant, but the two i have seen at AD's have a tang. A deployant is a whole lot more Pt and obviously would cost a ton to add on later.

My understanding is that there are different list prices with or without the deployant. At least, my AD showed me a price list that gave these options for much of the Lange lineup.

i thought they "upgraded" the buckle and kept the RRP the same, but of course that is what i heard somewhere a while ago and didn't pay too much attention at the time to specifics.

Thats good to know if if there are different versions at different prices though. I had just assumed if they did go to deployant they were phasing out the tang.

Are secondary markets any kinder to APs? It seems to me that aside from Patek and Rolex (and to some degree RM), most watch brands lose 30-40% in the secondary market.

I picked up a new Dato up/down last fall and it came with the deployant. I ended up reversing the strap because the clasp dug into my wrist.
