An icon from Rolex vs. a darling from Patek

Hello watchfam,

SHORT STORY: Would love to hear your thoughts on two great timepieces I have adored for quite some time, the Patek 5167 vs. Rolex WG DD40 Olive dial. Both is not an option

Before someone gets on my case that I should make my own decision. I would kindly say the fun part of this game is the discussion and understanding the thoughts from other seasoned collectors who have been around the block.

—————————————-

LONG STORY: My hunt for a 5167 started 8 months ago and now I finally have an opportunity to purchase one if I fly to Switzerland. Yet, I am also quite fond of owning a DD which has been on my list of watches to own.

Of course I am not comparing apples to apples, but in this game, being illogical is the norm. Although they are at two different price points, I will be going the grey route on the DD to offset some of the price difference. Or if anyone wants to hook me up with their AD for spectacular pricing, let me know

As much as I love the 5167, now I am thinking it is a lot for a “simple” Patek with a rubber strap. Yet, I know the DD does not have as much craftsmanship and horological pedigree. Lately I’ve also been thinking more about pieces that can last the test of time and can fit the “one watch” argument. And I feel DD is a common choice. Either way, I’m conflicted and would love to hear some of your thoughts.

My current collection consists of a BLNR, Hulk (which I will be selling if I go DD), 15202 and FPJ Bleu.

Cheers,
John

Never was the biggest fan of Patek's but I do appreciate the craftsmanship of their timepieces. That being said I would much rather go for something like the AP jumbo vs the DD40 as a one stop watch. I think either of those would definitely do it for me. Either way you have yourself a great choice here. Between the two I'd choose the DD40, love that green dial!

There is something to be said for the bracelet issue that you brought up. The DD40 is a spectacular watch with plenty of pedigree and history. It will be recognized by the masses where as the Patek will most def fly under the radar to most. back to you....

That green dial with the blue shirt.......terrific.

I don't like non-round dials anyway but that Patek just looks too big.

That DD40 is the cat's meow. No comparison for me between the two. DD40 all day.

Listen I’m a Rolex man through and through, but the Aquanaut is awesome and if I could own one I’d jump at it.

That Olive dial makes the AP look ordinary.

The olive is one of the best watches on the planet, IMO. Movement, looks, feel on the wrist, the list goes on. There's not many I would vote for against it, and in this case, not the Aqua.

Now if you were talking Nautilus, that would be a harder choice.

Had the 5167 for a few years and it taught me that if i wanted a sports watch, a Rolex is the way to go. The longer i'm away from the 5167 being my daily beater, the more it doesn't look as nice as once thought.

I already have the jumbo so I’m guessing the DD would be a great combo

Actually it may be the angle, but it fits quite well. Very thin

Yes, thankfully I don’t have to make a decision between the nautilus or DD. Do you think the olive dial would age well?

That is the perspective I’m looking for. Thank you for sharing your thoughts! Although the rear of the Patek is a sight to behold

Both these watches require proper figment in order to be comfortable. I love my 5164a (sold my 5167a as it was redundant) and my Pt DDII. I will admit that the Patek has a better resale value. Maybe try the 5167 first? Easy enough to flip towards the DD40.

The DD, is good in every single way. The Aquqnaut is bad in every single way, to me.

I am also soon to be venturing into Patek land as well. I would go the Nautilus route before the Aquanaut though. Most of the research indicates the Nautilus is the way, and it must be on a bracelet.

The one Patek i did have twice was the 5110RG (also had the matching dealer wall clock). As for the Aqua.... Just that the bezel of the 5167 showed many scratches, dings, etc. Also had the lume fall out of the '1" on the "10' hour raised lettering, and it just never really.... Anywho, the Sub ND ceramic with Everest strap/clasp was my daily beater afterwards until my wife saw the SS SkyD with blue dial on my wrist. That's been the daily beater ever since. We travel, so the dual time is excellent with the annual calender function.

Agree!

Well, er, um... am a bit blushing as have a DD40 RG here. Wife and her daughter said the bling dial was the best and so... Of course in the end what really matters is that you.... enjoy your time

I like the Aquanaut but I would not take a long haul flight to get one! If my local AD gets one I will probably take it just to rotate for a while and flip for minimal loss when I get tired of it. Not desperate to get one though, but I'm not a huge fan of PP sports watches, much prefer the Royal Oak line in every instance.

I don't love the DD in white gold, would much prefer rose gold or better yet the iconic yellow gold. A YG DayDate with that President bracelet, that's an all time classic Rolex right there, how the watch was originally 'meant' to be.

All gold brings in another dimension of enjoying the watch and Rolex reliability is hard to beat. Aquanaut has awesome design and it is haute horlogerie piece.

I would not even think about PP when i see how this green dial whitegold DD wears on your wrist.

Based on your collection I think I would add a PP, not the 5167 but the 5164.

I have huge respect for Patek’s horological pedigree and craftsmanship. However, when you are comparing a solid gold Rolex icon to a SS watch on a rubber strap, I’ll take the Rolex every single time

This doesn't seem like a close fight to me.....but then again I never took to Patek's Aquanaut....if we're talking about Nautilus series I might sing a different tune. Pick up the WG DD40 in the olive green dial, I have the same watch and you will not be disappointed.
