Icon7 New Panerais: 753, 754 & 779....all are nice!

OP just came out with a mid-July surprise of 3 new models: 753, 754 & 779.

The 753 strikes me as the Perfect modern Rad....even if the logo isn't "traditional" on a Rad, it looks great, IMHO. First reaction to this one:

754 is a solid addition to the "black seal" family.

The 779 is a bit of a mish-mash of classic Panerai elements, but, who cares, it looks good! Well, maybe except for the bund strap, which I could live without.

753 - Rad logo (45 mm, 100 m WR, 3-day manual)

754 - Rad black seal (45 mm, 100 m WR, 3-day manual)

779 - Luminor in Ti with DLC, Cali dial (44 mm 8-day manual)

Nice watches but not on my Panerai radar for a future purchase.

Thanks for posting Cru

I really like that 753. I hate that I like so many PAM’s

Thanks for sharing, Cru

I've been praying for a 1950 Luminor with a Cali dial. I love that 779 but I'd slap an Asso on it and then drop-kick that ghastly bund strap straight off the nearest cliff.

I’d sell the kids for a Cali dial 1950, but not dlc. How you doing btw?

Not loving the Cali dial on the 1950, but I appreciate Panerai doing something new, especially with the strap.

I'm really digging the PAM753 but I'm a little worried about jumping to a 45mm watch. My daily is a 42mm Explorer II. I know the Panerai is going to wear large, but can anyone comment on how large they feel? I'd love to see a side by side of a 42mm Explorer II and a 45mm Radiomir if anyone has one.

maybe this will help even though its not an explorer II. for me, the radiomir wears much smaller than 45mm because it is so flat.

The 753 really is a beautiful watch. I’ve tried it on and love it.... at the boutique, though, they were not able to confirm if the back is traditional screw-down or (cost cutting new entry level style Panerai) snap-on case back. I followed up by email and have not gotten a response, which makes me think it is, unfortunately, snap-on.

If that’s not an issue for you, you see with the photo above that a 40mm Rolex GMT and 45mm Radiomir actually go quite well together, with the absolute size of the Rad not being the only factor (also wire lugs, no PCLs, smooth & thin bezel, simple as opposed to busy dial).

It it is an issue, a 212 would be a great choice.

Thanks so much for the picture. This is really helpful. The Radiomir looks basically the same size as the GMT. Ironically I just parted with my GMT (LN) to fund a Panerai and possibly a JLC. The GMT definitely wore smaller than my Explorer II.

I'm far less worried about the size of the Panerai now. The 753 appears to be pretty thin too, so that should help.

Thanks for the feedback. The 753 is in fact the snap on case back. I don't prefer it but it's certainly not an issue for me as I'm not a diver.

I agree that the picture of the Panerai and the Rolex really puts the size issue in perspective. Definitely a lot more to it than the nominal size.

Also, I really like that 212....but then again I pretty much like every Panerai.

When I tried one on, I was picking up my 164 from service, so I did a visual side-by-side. Taking everything into account, the 753 is basically the same total thickness as my 164 (753 is probably a little bit thinner), but, visually speaking, the 753 appears thinner on the wrist due to the shape of the case (angled vs straight side) and lug shape (wires instead of thicker Luminor lugs).

I really liked the look and feel of the 753.

Thanks for the information.

How did you come to find out it is snap-on?

I'll try to locate where I found out about the caseback. I think it was in the comments on the Hodinkee article, but I'll try to confirm that. Seems like I saw it a few different places though.

I was originally going to go with the 753, but I'm going to go 754. It's a tough call because I really like the open 6 and 9, but the more I think about it, I've never owned a watch with no visual way to tell if it's running. Having the sub dial for seconds will help. I also like the extra line of "Black Seal" text. I'll probably add the brown leather strap from the 753 as well as a black alligator one to dress it up.

Here’s another comparison shot from my trip to the Panerai boutique in Vegas. PAM 1523 vs Explorer II. Both 42mm.

Nice side-by-side.

Just goes to show that the width is far from telling the whole story.

I'll have a side by side with a new Panerai and my Explorer II on Thursday Cru. Hint: It's one of the three listed above.

Does anyone know the thickness of these new Panerai's? I can't find it anywhere.

OK Cru....I got some information directly from Panerai via a chat session on their web site.

Hello, thank you for visiting Panerai. How could I assist you?
20:48
You:
Good evening. Can you tell me the thickness of the case on the PAM 754 please?
You:
I can't seen to find it anywhere on your web site.

20:50
Marquita :
Welcome to Panerai, my name is MarQuita. I am happy to assist you.
One moment and I will provide the case thickness.
20:51
You:
Thank you MarQuita.
You:
Also can you confirm that the case back is snap on and not a screw in?

20:52
Marquita :
Ok, one moment and I will let you know.
20:53
Thickness is 12.7 MM and the case back is screwed.
20:53
You:
Oh excellent on both counts. Thanks so much!

Just to follow up, I received a message from the Panerai boutique that the 753/754’s backs are neither screw-down or snap-on, but rather it is “driven”.

“Driven” sounds like “snap on” to me, but we all know that Panerai prefers “device that protects the crown” over “crown protector”.

Either way, I’ll be admiring the 753 for its looks, but it’s off my list.
