This is a killer watch - collected mine two weeks ago. Not sure about the strap though.

I received mine a little over a week ago. My bezel has a little play to it. Is anyone else’s bezel loose and makes noise when tapped?

Congrats

What is it about the strap that you don't like? The overall style, or the tapering (22->18)?

Coming from a dive-watch / Panerai background, I ususally go for beefy, non-tapered straps. However, a beefy strap would not compliment the 765's sleek lugs imo. I might consider going with a non-tapered, 22-22mm strap...

Black dial for me means black strap but many prefer some shade of brown.

Congrats as well

A little play is nomal. This is not a diving bezel / 24hr GMT and the "jump" required to move a whole hour apparently requires a different mechanism.

My assumption is that the three screws are only for "re-creation" purposes but maybe they are actually really used... It wouldn't hurt to just check that they are not loose...

I have ordered a shiny black lizard strap. This will add some more vintage vibe.

the bezel screws on the 765AVI are NOT for decoration, they connect bezel & case; this was only re-designed on the 1962 Mk2 "Raquel Welch".

black wasn't my first choice for the strap either, but that was the only point where I didn't have full design authority....

as I can't post pics here yet, I'll Traveller to be so kind and post a pic of my preferred combo...

What do you feel is the preferred strap for the 765r? Thanks!

well, a relatively clear choice for me ;)

these are Mk1.1 from April 1953 to Mk1.4 from June 1961, the last "all black" Mk1 production run:

so shades of tan/camel/honey/brown - here the Re-Edition on a honey Saffiano strap & a Mk1.1 "Digital Pre-Geneve" on distressed brown, all lovely combos.

Regarding the lume color topic, I tend to shy away from lume that has been "aged" to match what a vintage piece looks like "today".

Then there was the big debate re. the latest $14K Speedmaster (321 Ed White) where the colored-lume camp argued that it was never sold with pure white tritium lume and was indeed off-white. I'm no expert as I wasn't buying new watches in the 60s (or 50s) but in the end, I like what I like...

...which brings me to the topic of the two recent Breitling re-editions. Both have colored patina but for reasons beyond (my own) logic, I like the 806's color very much "as is" but less enchanted by the 765's and would have been just as happy had it come with pure white lume.

FWIW, here's a mosaic of shots I took of both; I tried to select photos that best represent the real color as seen in good daylight (& not in direct sunlight):

l. 806, r. 765

Thank you! So it was a Breitling design decision to go with a black strap on steel? I think the brown strap on the RG and platinum would have been a nice on the steel as well.

ah... the fauxtina discussion

well, we went through all (hand colored, originally) catalogs from the 1940s onwards, the earliest color catalogs in the museum, spoke to witnesses that knew the watches when they were launched (the Sales Director of Breitling USA Corp. & later President of the US-distributor Wakmann, Joseph Karasick is alive, well and very, very sharp at the ripe age of 94) - and for both the Navitimer and the 765AVI tried to duplicate the color and texture of the original lume (including having it applied by hand).

Radium lume never was white (we have a slighty lighter yellow w/ the early Tritiu on the Mk3.2 and later reverse panda Navitimer, then some batches of greenish lume in the late 1960s and early 1970s, but also never white Tritium)

Thanks for your feedback, Fred! From those catalog pics, there can be little doubt that the Toptime & 2005 have a cream tint. The image of the Navitimer is not clear enough (for me) to make a decision but I'll accept it's off-white too.

Your comment about "never white Tritium" - I assume this is limited to Breitling or at least pre-80s because for sure there are enough Submariners & Sea Dwellers (like the "Great White") where the white tritium never "aged" and hence, still white... .

p.s. Enjoyed my 765r yesterday for #FliegerFriday

Since I started this thread, it's only fair that I follow through on my praise by pulling the trigger!

I actually called my local AD the day I saw this Instagram post. They didn't carry Breitling locally. But, their sister store does and he said it would be no problem. Then, I returned to travelling every week and my SA left the AD. Well, during a trip to NYC and the Breitling boutique on Tuesday, they had all three in the display case and decided to pull the trigger on the SS:

She arrived yesterday morning at my doorstep:

She joins my other Breitling: the Navitimer Ref. 806 1959 Re-Edition:

Tried to capture the domed acrylic crystal:

Well, I'm a big fan of the work Goerges Kern is doing with the team at Breitling:
