Flip a few pieces for a Dato 39mm?

Prices on these are really good, might be time to clear out some kruft and get one. Opinions?

Depends on whats going out... I really like the proportions of the 39 but dislike the roman numerals. Still a fantastic timepiece.

Seems like another expensive paperweight. You have a 5522.....why would you ever own another watch?

That’s the thing though, we can all eulogise about how wonderful that movement view is, how their customer service is great, and so on and so forth, but the only real opinion that matters is your own.
If the thickness is your cause for hesitation, then you may need to try it on at the AD’s a few times to see if you can either convince yourself it’s liveable with or accept that for all its pros, this is a con which kills the notion stone dead.
There is never any race on, so if it takes 5 visits to come to a decision, then that’s what it takes.

On the other hand, if you can afford to play the game by throwing caution to the wind, presuming you’re 50:50 when trying it on, then you can live with it for a few months or more to see if the thickness is no longer a bone of contention.
In that respect, you may want to go pre-owned to minimise how much you’ll be out of pocket if you end up deciding it’s not the one for you.

A very cool watch. As mentioned, go try it on and see if it works. You will know immediately. If it does, then see how you can make it work. If it does not, then cross it off the list and find something that does.

This is a good point, but in this case I already have a bunch of other watches. I'd be pruning down a bit.

Yeah I'd pick it up used for sure on a trade; so I'd probably be relatively insulated if ultimately it doesn't do it for me.

I would much prefer to have a few great watches than a bunch of good watches.

I have a buddy with an L1 and I think it's a cool watch and find myself lusting after ALS watches, but I must admit that even the L1 is really, really thick. I've never seen or obviously tried on a Dato, but think for me the idea of one would be more appealing than the actual ownership of one. But as others have said, try one on and figure out what works for you.

Ha, I'm the opposite love the Romans but the size is a bit squished and top heavy, and thus don't really like the 41mm either without Romans. Zeitwerk is my ideal.

You should also think about the 1815 Chrknograph. Especially with the type two dial without the scale. Super clean layout. Very thin relative to the dato and the exact same view from the back.

I'm a huge ALS chronograph fan, so I'd probably go for it depending on what you would sell or trade for it. That written, the 39mm Datograph, especially in platinum is a pretty thick and heavy watch. It was just a bit too thick for my taste and didn't quite sit right on my wrist, so I went for the 1815 chronograph, which is basically the same movement minus the date, which I actually prefer. If you like the looks of the platinum Datograph but don't want the thickness, the new black dial white gold 1815 Chronograph is a nice substitute. I do wish, however, that they made it in platinum.

Love the Datograph, but the 39mm is a bit unbalanced and thick for my taste. Don't get me wrong, I love the watch, but I would probably get an 1815 chrono instead.
