Advice for a Noob - first Seiko

Which Seiko would you recommend as my first? I am trying to upgrade my G-Shock for weekend activities and some fun in the pool. What's the difference between the Padi and the turtle? I like how they look but they're quite large at 44/45mm. I don't mind if they look large on my 6.5" wrist as long they're comfortable. Looking forward to some guidance and suggestions. Cheers!

Turtle is a rounded case type, while PADI is just a word on the dial of various dive watches (some Turtles included).

Take a look at the SRP777 and SRP779 Turtles, and see how you like the style. These are the base model Turtles. I have a Japanese SBDY015 on rubber, which is basically the Japanese Domestic Market version of the SRP777. Really comfortable and tough as nails. (My wrist is 7.25).

I'm sure others will have lots of suggestions for you, too.

Thanks Adam! The ones I have been eyeing seem to be the same model as yours but in different color variations.

Yep, those are both Turtles and either would make a great first Seiko, though I prefer the rubber strap for comfort.

I am a huge Seiko dive watch fan and have several Turtles including the PADI with the blue sunburst dial. I like the bracelet but the rubber strap works well also. My watches also keep good time when worn.

That's a beauty! Maybe I'll go with this one while I wait for the new Rolex SS BLRO.

I have a SRP779 that is my daily beater and I totally love it. I have watches that cost many thousands more and I still find myself excited to wear my Seiko diver over the others.

With that said, I love the turtle case. You may find the 44mm turtle a little large for your wrist. You can google baby turtle and see a smaller version that is pretty sweet. good luck.

First, with Seikos for small wrists it can more be the lug-to-lug than the case size, and how flat or otherwise shaped your wrist is. Many of the 42-44 mm Seikos have lug-to-lug under 50, which may work. At 6.5 you may be maxing out at around 48 or so, dependent on the shape of your wrist. This means you might be able to do a Turtle, without it hanging over your wrist. My suggestion is that you go into a retail store that has them and try on some models to see how they fit first, especially if you are considering buying online.

Which Seiko to buy

Read, read and read some more....but; in my limited opinion, you can't go wrong with a vintage 6306 or 6309. Make sure that is has been serviced recently. IN the US, Spencer Klein is the go-to guy. He is a really nice guy, will work on just about any seiko and sells some too!
I have limited info about the UK....I have read a few things about the WatchBloke and visited his website. He appears very knowledgeable.

Try the Seiko mini turtle Padi. It looks awesome, and it’s good sports watch you can wear for day to day and swimming. Also it’s smaller than the turtle, as the turtle do wear big.

I have owned 5 SRP's, I like them a lot but they wore a little big on me. So I know have a Seiko SRPC39k1 which is a 42mm version. I definitely like it better.

Thanks guys! Did some research on the "mini/baby" turtles. I'm sure the smaller case will be better for smaller wrists but the new case design seems a bit plain whereas the original turtles are quite unique. Will have to try both on and see.

Have a look at Bruce Williams’ YouTube channel. He does a lot of Seiko watch reviews.
