There are a lot of dream watches out there....but watches I intend to add to my collection are....

1. Rolex: I own my grail (116518-0073)...but I still need to add a DD/DD2 to finish off my rolex collection.

2. Patek Philippe: 5712r or 5205r(black dial)...I haven't made up my mind yet.

3. Panerai: Radiomir 292j with ceramic crown.

4. Jeager-LeCoultre: Grande Reverso Annual Calender or DUO

5. A.Lange & Sohne: Datograph up/down

6. Audermars Piguet: 15202 blue dial anniversary model, and if I have a hard time finding this one I could easily go for a 26320 blue dial or 15400 blue dial.

Rolex: 8171. I don't ask for much. Spectacular.
https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/ha...-at-antiquorum

AP: Steel Jumbo, blue dial, no seconds.

PP: Currently struggling to have much/any love for PP. Shame. 5712/1A is lovely, that will do. Especially as I own one.

FPJ: Where do I start? The Centigraphe & Vagabondage don't do it, but everything else is fair game. The QP and Tourbillon are particular highlights.

JLC: The dead seconds Geographic thing.

Zenith: El Primero. Duh! What else? I have one!

Adds

I would look long term at adding the following:

ALS Lange 1 - an icon
ALS Datograph in pt - the best chronograph on the planet
JLC Reverso - another icon

Not from every brand but from a variety if models yes, these are the favorite models I have gotten from these types of watches, and I must say they are my favorite ones from these models, all 4 are clearly my favorite available ones in those styles.

The Nautilus, Aquanaut, AP RO and ROO are my 4 favorite watch types, so I chose the ones I loved best and got them

PP Nautilus 5712
PP Aquanaut 5167R
AP ROO ceramic diver
AP RO blue dial 15300

And if you consider my favorite Rolex is the Daytona C then I also got one for the misses

Rolex : 116619LB
Omega : CK 2998
Lange : 1815
FP Journe : Chronometre Bleu
Nomos : True Blue Weltzeit
IWC : Portuguese Rattrapante
Breguet : the recently released Classique
Blancpain : recently released Tribute To Fifty Fathoms Mil-Spec
JLC : 2011 Tribute To Deep Sea Alarm

Generally not a fan of big, complicated watches.

My list above is much, much more of a dream list than representative of what I do, or will ever own.

I do hope to add the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Mil-Spec in the next year. Fell in love with it after the Basel reveal, finally trimmed down the dimensions.
In the enxt couple years, I would love to get the Bregeut Classique

Of my own collection, fav from each brand:
Rolex : BLNR
Omega : FIOS
Nomos : True Blue Weltzeit
IWC : 3714-48
Hamilton : Khaki QNE
Citizen : Eco Drive

Of course the ones I put didn't take into consideration the day when I loose my mind, sell my properties, and buy a minute repeater, and a few other crazy watches

OP, great post. I'm always interested in the process of how one decides what a collection should constitute.

I'm not new to loving watches, but I a man new to the concept of collecting.

Initially, I decided to collect the Rolex references I enjoy and what I find iconic. I focused on new reference pieces. I ended up with SubC date, BLNR and lumed Explorer 1. Ultimately I found this concept somewhat lacking as I know the Daytona is iconic, however, I personally find the watch too busy.

Next I decided to focus, as the OP has, on a collection of single references from the major houses. The references will be three handers w/o complications (dates acceptable). I am in the process of what my concept of "major" houses will constitute. I used information from a TRF regarding who builds in house as opposed to rebranding, and I am limiting the collection to Swiss houses for the moment. Thus far my list includes: Rolex, Patek, VC, AP, Omega.

The SubC date fills the Rolex slot. I just purchased an Aquanaut to fill the PP slot. Next will be AP or VC.

AP - I really like the 15202, but no second hand. I'm going with a blue dial 15400.

VC - I missed a chance at the watch I wish to add to fill this slot. I am looking for the recently discontinued titanium overseas, deep stream.

Omega - heresy, this will be the hardest slot to fill as I'm not an Omega fan. I have to do some research.

I am open to suggestion on other houses to add.

I only got 2 brands
Omega: Speedmaster professional
Rolex: Daytona SS white dial
Mind you, these are my favorites for each brand since I got other watches from each brand.
Cheers.

The only thing titanium on the Deep Stream is the satin bead-blasted bezel. Everything else is steel, just like the rest of the non-PM models.
Would’ve been nice if they’d pushed the boat out and did it in full titanium.

definitely if I had a large collection, I would choose a model or two from each brand.

Rolex: 16570 (own, RG YM someday)
AP: 15300
Patek: 5711 (or 5990), 5167 (or 5164)
Omega: Vintage Seamaster 300
Panerai: 512
Blancpain: Bathyscaphe 38mm
Zenith: 36,000 vph 38mm
VC: 1921
JLC: Reverso
ALS: 1815 up/down
Tudor: Black Bay Black (and maybe a Pelagos)
GO: Panomatic Lunar
Grand Seiko: Spring Drive GMT
FPJ: Chronometre Bleu
Moser: Endeavour

Probably other brands I would be interested in as well if I actually had the funds for the above.

Omega: Speedmaster Tin Tin
Panerai: 127 or latest Mare Nostrum

It's a good thread, thanks for reviving.

While I have more than one piece from a few different brands I have never been one of those collectors that were all in on one brand. The idea of having many pieces representing many brands has always been appealing to me and in some respects this is the way I see my collection going. Also to have variety in styles is important.

Daytona
ALS Datograph
Nautilus
Royal Oak
Speedmaster
Seiko Turtle
G-Shock 5600
Swatch Sistem51
JLC Reverso
Cartier (perhaps a Tank or some sort)
*Something from the Independents (FPJ Resonance, Gronfeld 1941)
*Something hyper modern in design or materials/process (Urwerk, RM, MB&F, Romain Gauthier etc perhaps there's room for two here, one which has a more traditional design and one which does not!)
*Something handmade (KV, Roger Smith etc)

This list could go on and on!

Cool so let start with the ones in my collection:

Rolex contemporary 116500LN
Rolex vintage 1665 Comex (just one of my pet peeves working up from 1665 great white to the Comex)

AP: 26320 (Its the best looking chrono despite the F Piaguet Movement)

Patek contemporary: 5712
Patek vintage(ish): 5970 in white gold silver dial

A Lange: Datograph

VC: Patrimony

A special shout out to the GMT BLNR with factory set baguette dials for the uber flashy occasions.

It's funny you posted this, as I was pondering this over the weekend after taking a look at some pieces in person. Ruling out stuff over $50k grey or slightly used (as face it, most of our 'favorites' would be crazy expensive and completely unobtainable outside of winning the lottery), I would choose the below from my 5 favorite brands. Seems my favorite size is definitely 39-41mm.

Rolex- 16600

AP- 15300

PP- 5711

VC- 4300v

ALS- 1815 Chrono

Rolex - DD platinum (I prefer the 36mm 118206 to the dd2 or 40)
PP - 5712 1A
AP - RO Jumbo, blue dial
Panerai - nil
Omega - nil (maybe a speedy pro, but probably not)
Zenith - El Primero
Lange - nil
FPJourne - tourbillon or perp calendar
