In the novel, he was from a super wealthy family, and given his penchant to be supreme (i.e., the business cards of his colleague being far better), I would see him wearing Patek.

If Rolex, PM Daytona. SkyDweller or DayDate maybe?

I’ve only seen the movie once and never read the book but I’m thinking he would want something easily recognizable. He wants his superiority to be known. I think he’d still go with a Datejust or Day-Date.

Ceramic Daytona or 5711-1a .. even though he could afford anything he wanted.

I didn't have access to the internet back then and again neither had I owned any smartphone nor had any expensive watches ! Sure, but that was back in the 1970s and early 1980s. Actually, I think they were pictures of cars or chicks or 70s rock bands.

I figured we were all grownups here (just busting your chops).
