The statistics show that crime is actually down in a huge way, especially violent crime from 20 years ago.

perception and reality don't always match up

I totally agree with Paul, and that doesn't happen often

Sure, in the US that's right, in Europe it's the total opposite, we have less and less cops, judges consider the criminals from some parts of the population as "victims" of society, they either don't get any time or so little they don't give a damn, if you want to know the kinds of things that go on, I suggest you read my posts on this thread, it's not what I saw on the news or some other crap, it's what happened to me and people I know

I agree with you on the 24 hour news perception part Tyler.

Violent crime statistics on the other hand is skewed. You have to look at what the state and local governments are putting into the violent crime categories now. A lot of crimes there were categorized as a violent crime 20 years ago are no longer categorized the same today. Even with that, violent crime statistics are back on the rise here in the states.

just saying the number of murders in New York for example are at pretty much all time lows. The ones they do have are reported far more than ones 25 years ago so you would tend to think it was worse especially if you don't live there. We didn't have 24 hour news when i was a kid so i would not have known anyway what crime was like in NYC, today i hear about crime a lot there.

Late 80's and early 90's NYC had as many as 2,000 murders per year. Last year it was 334. As far as Europe goes London usually has around 115 per year currently.
I would much rather take my chances today than in the late 80's/early 90's.

People tend to remember the past in much more positive terms than it actually was at the time, crime is no exception.
