5513 - What's Happening

Yes, it has been a while since I've been around. I've made a few life changes, nothing worth noting, and I had to put my obsession on the back burner.

BUT.......

I took a looksie the other day and noticed that 5513's, especially MAXI's have gone crazy.

Anyone want to tell me what I'm missing in the market place? I'm half tempted to sell mine ( I won't ) but damn, 10K for a Maxi MK4? What gives?

It's not just you. I've noticed the big jump in prices too. And, IMO, new listings for 5513s, 1665s, 1680s and basically all the other matte dial/plexi references are down, which could be a contributing factor in the price increases.

My 5513 MK5, which I was lucky enough to get years ago before things got really crazy. But who knows, ten years from now today's prices might seem like an absolute bargain.

Oh, and it's not just Rolex that has seen these increases. I see this happening with the pre moon Speedmasters too.

The 5513 matte dial is absolutely an iconic for the most popular watch in the world. Anyone like submariner, they will eventually get a matte 5513 as the most original design of diving watch.

Vintage chronographs, especially 3 register and center push rattrapantes are hot.

Speaking of Valjoux 72...can't wait to get my Longines 8224-2 back from service...42mm diving chronograph super compressors are sweet:)

Vintage Rolex has been hot for sometime and is climbing. Tudor Sub are on a roll too.

Absolutely. My dreams of someday acquiring a Ulysses Nardin 7536 were crushed when I recently saw one go for over 60K USD. Last one I saw a couple years back went for 10K USD.

Honestly, is there any Rolex ref that isn't incredibly expensive right now? Also, I'm seeing more and more really below par examples being offered at very high prices. Anything really nice is just astronomical.

No doubt Maxis have really jumped. I sadly let mine go as part of a trade to acquire my gilt. I knew I would regret it and have been kicking myself since.

5513's in general have seen an explosion in prices. For instance, I remember I could buy crisp 5513 Maxi's for $5,500-$7,000 only 2-3 years ago.

On the matt dial front....the 16800 is a screaming bargain....(or any of the Tudors) on the glossy side the spider dials are still cheap as are the later zeniths.....outside of that....nada. Hopefully this is not like buying palm desert real estate in early 2007......

I wanted a no date matt dial but i could not find one that made the grade/value combo i was looking for. I went in the snowflake direction and i have been fairly happy so far.....and met some pretty cool Tudorheads along the way.

Anyone could tag an unrealistic price to a watch but if it doesnt sell, the market isn't valuing it.

p.s. last one is depth first model - more valuable to begin with, FYI

It's interesting you say Tudor. Even the 79090 is pushing $3,000+ for anything nice. Snowflakes are reasonable compared to a red Sub, but they're about 3 times more expensive than they were five years ago.

I've been into watches for about 10 years, and the only definite "bubble burst" I've seen in that time was Tudor. It will be interesting to see if the snowflakes sustain the $6,000+ price point.

Supply and demand....there are far fewer snowflakes than 5513s....look at the heuers.....prices doubled in a matter of months....after one auction last year you cannot find them now.

To me a snowflake is uniqur and has a charm.

I really love the snowflakes, especially the rarer ND version. The lollipop subs are great too. Really Tudor is the only game in town if you want a blue sub in SS.

the bubble was just a quick unexplained run up in all the prices (big blocks were asking above $5,000) maybe five years ago. Prices collapsed pretty quickly after, and then rose slowly to their current levels.

All from the same reputable seller and all sold (except the last one)...of course we don't know at what price they sold for. Good catch on the last one, can't believe I missed that...I was more concerned about making sure they were all feet first.
