Help with Meters First Red Sub

Hi,

I'm considering this meters first red sub. The dealer seems to have a good rep. Does it look correct? What do you think is a fair price (I know that is tough to say)?

Best,

JG

My first thought too. Could be the picture, but if not...

Way overpriced, IMHO, but as a buyer I would never assign any special value to meters-first dials versus feet-first dials. (That's meaningless detail in my book, but I realize I'm in the minority.)

Overall looks like a nice example, but I'd definitely want to see better/more photos, especially in natural light, instead of these odd studio photos. Looks like there's some tritium loss or uneven patina on the hour plots, but it's hard to tell to what extent in these photos. (Dirt around the rehaut can be cleaned).

Crown guards do look a little off, maybe because of polishing, but it could also just be the angle/lighting in the photos. More minor, that folded bracelet has come serious stretch on it.

I could get a mint 1665 Great White with papers/boxes for a lot less than what sellers of these red Subs are asking! Seems crazy.

Nice looking MK1. Based just on preference (not necessarily market value), I would take that Sea-Dweller any day of the week over any red Sub, especially if I could also save a ton of money. I've owned both, and the chunky feel of the 1665 is tough to beat.

Definitely ask for more photos. The hands seem to be a lot lighter than the dial. Buy whatever sings to you. red and double red will always be more sought after than the alternative. But I will get the best sample money can buy between red and 1665 white.

hands

as a novice still learning to spot subtle differences I note the lume on the dial is different to that on the hands, could these be service replacements? I would be interested in what others have to say, cheers "H"

Corrosion all around but at 2 o'clock very noticeable. May or may not have affected the dial or movement. Lousy pictures from a pro dealer leaving you in the dark Crown protector on same side looks thin compared to the other side. Dent in the lug at 7. Bracelet looks like scrap. I don't know about market prices but this seems a tad expensive.

Hi,
You need to ask re the serial number. Should be no more than a 2.2m to 2.25m for a Mk1 as aguide.
It certainly doesnt look like a Mk1 dial on 2 counts that i can see from here.
1. Firstly the red Submariner looks to bright and pronounced - a Mk1 is is written over white which makes it a little dull
2. It looks to have closed 6's. A Mk1 has open

3. the serif is thicker on the Mk1 depth rating - note also the hook on the end t, the Mk1 is more upright.

It would seem to be a Mk2.

I know the watch dealer - he is in Miami - nice guy - but as always do your research!

Condition is paramount.

These filtered studio pictures are used to hide flaws..

You need to see a picture in natural light of the dial to make a fair determination of condition (the devil is in the details).

For a crisp factory original piece, they can command amazing premiums regardless of b&p's due to the uncommon nature of them at market...

But for a piece like the 1680 posted above, it to me looks like a run of the mill 1680 you tend to see on ebay or else where..

I have seen worse, but this example certainly isn't the best, especially at 22k

That was a reference to the 1665 SD, not the red 1680.

that's a mark III dial , most mark III turn tropical / brown, this one is still black
that corrosion is rather common on meters first 1680
proba replaced hands,
nice insert
still looks nice to me overall
does it have papers?
