Porsche just another BMW Audi Mercedes Volvo, now.

Simply far too common to be special?

Yes or No?

they are expensive. a base 911 with no option is like $120k with tax.

i dont think bmw or audi are on par with what porsche offers. the closest thing is the r8/10 (which is now dead).

a z4, rs6 coupe or rstt is not the same.

volvo is in different space.

bmw has made a lot of front ends ugly. i am not sure what they are thinking tbh but it is gross. the 4 series is horrible.

no porsche owner will agree with you though. they have a cult following.

Not talking halo models.

A Macan is like $50k and a base Panamera is $90k Cayman $75k

X5 Q7 XC90 loaded up money. 550i E63 S6 Lease about the same too.

The Genesis GV80 is very nice as well. Last I test drove these SUV’s (2021) the X7 stood out noticeably above The Mercedes GLS, Audi Q7 (and 8), Genesis (this was close), Lincoln (but nicer than I expected).

Didn’t drive Porsche, was looking for a larger SUV than the Cayenne.

They all compete now. Porsche is successful. But lost its ‘specialness’ in my opinion.

With the exception of the ultra race spec versions, and with the upcoming entry 4 series C class and A5 competitor, Porsche is like the rest for the most part.

911s are still special imo as they're in a much different price and income range

macans are a dime a dozen and not any different from whatever else you see 10 times a day

Even a Cayenne if you put anything decent on it well over $100k.

Overall though, yeah. If you want special then get a 993 or something.

Too many poors with Porsches now.

They're very common over here, the Cayenne and Macan are almost as common as a regular 5 series wagon, V90 or E klasse. I'm not complaining though, because the rest is either driving a Tesla or a very small ecobox.

I don’t care how common or rare a car is. It’s the driving experience that makes it special.

I had a 993 911 back in the day and an E46 M3 - not sure I’ll ever drive anything as special as those two again with the way modern cars are going. Only sold them as the repair bills were getting silly to keep them going.

I can’t believe you brought Volvo into this!

Just an anecdote -- I have tracked my rs6 at a few Porsche events and outside of the GT3s, etc, your 911, cayman, Boxster cannot keep up. Great on the corners but that TTV8 is a beast.

Agree with you and the nice thing it is still ‘relatively’ innocent looking but what a machine it is.
Kind of a brushed bracelet vs polished center links analogy.

Porsche... Powned by the VW Group. Kinda like Richemont, but for cars.

So true, and even moreso as all of these companies continue EV development. The Audi eTron GT and the Porsche Taycan are the same car (both Volkswagen J1 EV platform) at different price points. Simply, people will pay more for the name even though the car is the same. The toothpaste is out of the tube now...no going back.

Porsche just another BMW Audi Mercedes Volvo, now.

Underneath, they use common bases and parts. Interesting video on the Urus

I was in a Cayenne diesel Uber a few years back. A business partner sold his Carrera GT when I told him out of protest.

Porsche and Lexus make the best cars imho. I disagree and would take a 911 over anything from BMW or Mercedes.

New money sucks. The free money era ending is going to provide a wake up call in the form of a brick to the FICO.

Love my Alfa Romeo Stelvio, you don’t see loads of them on the road in the UK and it gets a lot of complimentary comments from people when I am at the Filling Station or in Car Parks etc. I’ve been driving Alfas for 35 years and love them.

A competent driver should be able to lap in a cayman/boxster faster than an RS6. Zero question. I have raced for many years and instruct with various track day orgs and the fact is about 90% of track day goers cannot give the car anywhere close to 100%. A cayman/boxster or any car with that much less HP than yours needs to use what it has to it’s advantage to put a lap together. Most cannot do that.

Overall as a former bmw owner and now Porsche owner, I disagree that Porsche is not better than all of the others noted.

911 owner here (997.2 4S manual for the nerds) and I have limited interest in newer models (aside from speedster). Not because they’re too common or accessible (they aren’t) but because they are not aesthetically pleasing and becoming increasingly bloated. My next addition will be a 997 GT3RS or a 993. Once Porsche went electric (for steering, away from hydraulic) their legendary road feel softened too. Catering more and more to mass appeal. No surprise and completely understandable. Their hardcore cars? Aesthetic point above.

Conversely, I added an Alfa Romeo 4C coupe a few years ago because it was so simple. More appealing than most Ferrari alternatives and incredibly impractical (rather it was fun,, unique). Own a few more sports cars but most of my interest is backward looking. Pure performance (0-60) is being commoditized by electric and that is fine. For weekend rides 0-60 in 2.6 vs 0-60 in 4.0 just doesn’t matter (to me).

I always felt 911s were very much an old money car but what do I know. They aren’t flashy at all relative to what you can buy for similar money. Almost historically buying a 911 was to accept the trade off of practicality and performance to flair and repair bills.

New money is the Huracan 100% or now the Urus haha

Porsche sold out. Similar to bmw and Mercedes. They were all once cars for the rich.

All 3 still have halo cars. And the M and AMG range are exceptional. But cannot compete with top tier Porsche.

The top of the line cayanne is epic. The engineering is magnificent. The 911 is another level car. Each of todays 17 variants are special. Truly. And they drive great.

One of the reasons the 911 or Porsche appeals to me is because there are so many. I have a cayanne turbo gt. In every measurable way it is better than the urus. But no one really notices it, unless the know cars. It blends in with the rest.

The 911 turbo s is in every way a super car in terms of performance. It is sexy as hell to me. But it blends in with every other 911. Mostly. Just one of the reasons it’s my perfect car.

The GT3 and GT3RS are epic level. They stand out. But not like a Huracan, which pretty basic for lambo. I’d take a GT p car over a Huracan any day.

The GT2RS is stuff of legend.

So imho, yes, Porsche lots itz pizzas. But no. Because even their regular cars are engineered so well. And the top tier is imho, perfection.

I am pretty much of the camp that 911’s just look great. I kid you not. New. Old. I love them all from the most basic version to the top tier. I just love the way they look.
