New kayak hit the water today...

Finally picked up the new kayak yesterday after the comedy of errors. Got it loaded up this morning and hit the water. Not knowing how this boat would feel, we took a nice leisurely paddle up a calm stretch of river to get a feel for it. It's a bit tippy if you're not paying attention, but it was really nice.

It is actually Quartzville Creek that runs between Green Peter and Foster Reservoirs in the Willamette Valley in Oregon.

That was bad.. It was a nice 3.5 hour outing ... it probably would have been longer but we got an emergency call while on the water and had to return. Great day though.

OK this thread is making me step up my desire to seriously get a kayak or a pair (for my wife too). Where do I start as far as length, style etc. Not looking for the absolute top of the line, but something fairly decent that I won't wish to upgrade after a year.

I think we want a standup paddle board too (eventually).

Anybody ever Kayak with a little dog?

I am about as "little dog" with kayaks as anyone...

There are different kayaks for different kinds of water... whitewater, flat water and ocean. The length of the kayak is related to the type of water, usage and your physical size and weight.

I would suggest going on the manufacturers websites and following their "What Kayak do I need?" area. Most manufacturers have them. There are also a lot of Paddle Sports Websites that can help as well.. Local Paddle Sport shops are usually happy to help as well.

Good luck finding a kayak in todays market...

Glad you got your kayak Paul, what an ordeal. Looks like a beautiful day.

Gnu, I'm a kayak rookie but as Paul said, it depends on where you want to take it. A longer kayak is faster and more efficient but less maneuverable. Then you can decide if you want a sit on top or sit in kayak. The sit-in's seem to be lighter and easier to load on and off a car alone, but the sit on top's are a bit more stable and easier to get back on if you come off in the water. I was out fishing with my father in law the other day and saw a kid in a dedicated fishing kayak. That thing was sweet, he had 3 rods set up and was able to stand and cast from the kayak, but maneuver through super shallow and weedy waterways that boats with a motor would have trouble with. Lots of options, sky is the limit.

Yes, after this post I went straight to the Dagger site... Looks like either what you got (Stratos) or the Axis might fit the bill. Looking mainly for lake, as we want to move north on a lake, either Finger lakes or Lake Champlain (or similar). But also something can can do inter coastal, as we sometimes live on the coast as well.

There are places around me that say they have Kayaks, but I guess I'll find out if they are in stock... Not in a super hurry yet, but there is a Lake near us, that we have never used recreationally, as well as the Chattahoochee river (which I rowed on for the past 4 years).

Also there is a Kayak company near me (Vibe Kayaks) that I have been to, not to shop for Kayaks, but to pitch business... Wonder how their stock is. I think they have Kayaks mainly for fishing though.

I like the looks of your Stratos. How do you like it?

Yes, I visited a buddy of mine up in NY, and we hit the water one evening in these short stubby Kayaks and went Bass fishing. He brought a cooler of beer and we had a blast. Caught several chunky Large Mouth Bass. Lot of fun from a Kayak.

I like it very much, but it has a pretty narrow cockpit compared to some recreational kayaks. It is a little more difficult to get in and out compared to say the Wilderness Systems Pungo 120 that I had originally ordered.

It is a little tippy until you get used to it as well. The Dagger videos refer to it as "playful" but I call it a bit tippy.

Excellent! That is one heckuva kayak delivery story you have. Actually told it over weekend while relaxing on shore of Masten Lake.

Looks like fantastic part of country where you tested it out.

Pro tip - a few cold ones tend to make it even more tippy!

We may have over strapped the kayaks for transport... but after ordeal trying to get mine, we figured better to over secure them, than under secure them.

We got the ok from the girlfriends cat, so all was good.
