My friend had some good perspective recently. The idea of your watches aging with you, going through life with you, changing with you, scarring with you, is what its all about. I can't wait to look back in 10 years and see all the scratches, all the dings, and remember we went through it together.

Well in the real world wearing any watch you will get it scratched thats a fact of wearing. Bur all normal wearing scratches easily rectified by those very nice people at the RSC at normal routine service. When after service watch will be returned as good as new only to get scratched again by normal wearing.

A scratch on a piece of jewelry, which was traditionally referred to as a tool watch for engaging in activities such as diving, driving and exploring, affects you that much?

The first scratch on my Daytona literally took my breath away. I just wasn't expecting it...I am kind of over that now that I have had it a few months. It was a lot of money for me to get that watch and to see the scratch really hurt...

The first one hurt 30+ years ago, but now it’s just a right of passage on a new watch acquire. I’ve banged up sports models wrenching motorcycles, crashing motorcycles, fixing stalled boat engines at sea, bashing on rocks cliff diving. You’re wearing a tool watch, don’t be the tool. It was never meant to be a museum piece.

It's akin to kerbing your alloys for the first time, yes you know that when you get it serviced you can get it fixed, but still hurts lol

Unavoidable especially where I live. Just the minerals in the tap water scratch the PCLs.

I do prefer brushed finishes. You can absolute hammer these watches and they still look incredible.

My wife scraped a GMT up against a brick wall and it was barely noticeable.

I know the angst that accompanies those battle scars all too well.
That first scratch on my 116618 while watering an elevated clay potted plant- yikes!
Of course that square little imperfection is where I can see it- always.
But you know, it's my scratch,my watch, my wabi sabi.
Enjoy your time piece along with the imperfections that life brings.

The trick is to buy a previously worn scratched watch so the first scratch you add on isn't noticeable

I love getting the first scratch. It is actually exhilarating because then that means all the senseless worries are now gone and you just wear it.

All mine get worn for work and play, I call the scratches patina. i HATE restored classic cars, we have this obsession with making everything like new and replacing original parts.Old guitars look better with wear too.

So here’s my take on scratches. During 12 years I was a one watch guy. This watch was a Rolex Daytona Zenith. Furthermore, the location where I lived did not have a Rolex service center in the whole country. My watch was worn 24/7 for all those years, and had so many scratches that they became invisible. The gold bezel was so worn that the numbers were barely perceptible, and all the black paint inside them had long gone. When I returned to civilization I treated my watch to a RSC service. They contacted me suggesting a new bezel, 12 o’clock entire 5 link bracelet (just that side), new chrono pushers, new crystal (small nick at 2) and new crown. I agreed to the total cost of 850 euros. I received the watch back looking as new. Literally. They’d polished it too. So, there you go. 12 years use erased in a heart beat.

Here she is at the ripe age of 24

I was always curious with a watch made for adventure, diving everyday wear which will definitely aquire scratches and dings over time. Why does the manufacturer make it so shiny and polished to begin with? I can see jewelry, but a "tool" watch?

Thats the advantage of buying pre owned watch. You dont have to worry about getting scratched since its all banged up.

I never really cared about scratches until I got my first real luxury watch. The day I caught the crown side of my Tudor gmt on my door frame I almost cried. There an nice dig on it now. Oh well now. It was my first few days with my puppy and we were on our way out for a walk. Ever time I see if I remember his little face and how excited he was. Good memories

Interesting analogy as I look at mine and remember so many of the big ones with such vivid detail. And just like on my aging body, so many little ones that I can’t remember at all.

I bought my sub to wear and never sell, so I don’t mind at all. It’s just a watch

Its gotten to the point now that whenever my watch takes a whack against a door frame, or part of the jet I'm flying that day I smile and look down at my wrist almost hoping its earned another battle scar...

I've had it in for service a couple of times already and always specify no polish. I'm never selling it, and want it to look the part- beat up and weathered just like I will be when my number finally comes up.

If you plan on keeping the watch for life then welcome the scratches...all they show is life being lived. Just like wrinkles reflect a life lived and hopefully some character along the way.
