RSC Singapore : 116660 Deep Sea Over polished caseback

Just Sent my 2008 Deep Sea (Japan model) to RSC Singapore a few days ago. I exchanged my fine 2013 Deep Sea for an average 2008 model as a collection from a local Singapore shop. I was not too happy with the over polished caseback when I inspected closely at home (completely removed the gray layer from the titanium metal). See photo below:

I then started wondering if this second-hand watch could be a bogus or counterfeit components/movement within. I called up a few watch repair stores in Singapore and all told me to send it to them for authentication, and that too, worried me so I decided to simply take it to RSC and have it checked.

These are the things I was told about sending Rolex for servicing in Singapore:

1. RSC does not carry out Authentication like they used to or
2. If found fake may confiscate or mark a cross and return to you or
3. If stolen, chances of getting the police take you in for a Q&A session or
4. RSC will return it back to you

Pricing
Initial quotation review : USD 80.00
Complete Overhaul if quotation accepted : USD 730.00 excluding parts

I got back a call under 2 hours after sending in the 2008 DSSD and guess what they said?

The watch is a stolen watch and you wouldn't get it back without proof of ownership?

The DSSD has a titanium case back. And his watch might've originally be sold in Japan?

Hi there, sorry about the suspense, accidentally posted without the outcome, this is my very first post but here it goes:

RSC-Singapore said it is 100% ORIGINAL with ALL ORIGINAL parts intact from the 2008 V series : 000XXX, that's like the very first batch that was produced with the M & V serial numbers for the 116660 Deep Sea launch. They also said I was very lucky to get an old watch with everything intact, appears may fakes are out there guys, so please send to RSC. This news was/is a great relief.

However, required a complete overhaul naturally as it had no service history in RSC-Singapore- (Singapore $990 / USD $730). Had to change a handful of components like the balancing weight (Rotor) as it was old or faulty, Pip (Pearl) was cracked which I was aware when I purchased the watch, caseback replaced as requested by me, crown recommended by them (which I was ok with), bezel disc (optional but I went for it since I was replacing the pip anyways).

Addition parts cost is another S$900 or US$740.
Total : S$1,950 (USD 1500-about there)

They called me up around 3 hours after sending in with an email of the estimates soon after the call. I had 1 month to make the decision. Made some calls and compared with what was offered with independent watch service folks, all could not do the complete job as RSC, so that sealed my decision within an hour to go ahead with RSC, though pricey but after close to 13 years leaving the factory and been around the world, I think she deserves this special treatment.

I have requested for the following to be carried out in addition to the overhaul and replacement parts (which will be ready under 4 weeks with 2 years warranty / parts exchanged, will not be returned especially the caseback which I would have liked to hold onto, but no dramas):

1. Position the crown to upright coronet ( since they will be replacing it)
2. Provide movement reading slip (which they will provide when I collect it)

They are agreeable to this (so guys here's another tip when you send to RSC, they will not say no to any requests besides discounts, worth the investment)

As for the photos, please bear with me I am having difficulties upload, I will get it up. You will get to see the before RSC and after RSC comparison photo, for sure.

Thank you and apologies on this lengthy post .

So, RSC overpolished the caseback or they will replace an overpolished caseback?

Ps, Good luck with getting the crown upright on the crown. It can’t be done.

Great piece though welcome!

And also the Sapphire Crystal changed (a deep scratch at 6 O'clock). So several changes here, giving the watch a total 13 year makeover, which I am happy to add alongside my 2021 Deep Sea ( James Cameron) collection.

Sorry, it was over polished when I picked it up, but could not really tell at the over-lit shop (take note of this, tricks of the grey shops).

Only spotted in daylight the following day. That actually got me to RSA in the first place to check if this is a fake piece. Turns out not, all's good.

Hi Wilson Pepper, that sounds promising, we will get the verdict in 3 weeks time. If it can be, it will a bonus, if not it will always be a ROLEX anyways, no worries!
Thanks

But surely then you'd have to baby it so that it doesn't go askew over time?

SGD$2000 to have it serviced - that's not cheap nowadays

Many years back I also went to Singapore Rolex Center to ask for quote to have my Explorer 114270 Z series serviced.

The staff asked do I wear this often and I say no as I have other Rolex pieces to rotate - he then advised no need to serviced - just wear my other watches and keep this Explorer and save $ .... Hahahaha
