Eavesdropping at the AD service counter. The most Depressing tale?

A nice elderly couple.
A beauty Pepsi GMT. He says he bought it new in 1987. I am guessing it's a 16750
His unqualified watchmaker tried to remove the case back. Stripping the back and the mid case. He was quoted $4k to replace the back and midcase and overhaul it. I hope I misunderstood what the price quote was. Is this possible?

The guy at the counter said "we used scotch tape to keep the back on so you don't lose parts."

Very sad tale of woe

It can be fixed.

No need for a replacement case middle and if the back is not chewed up it will be fine as well.

A rolex isn't any old fashion watch and letting just anyone crank on them leads to an expansive mess

I hope his watchmaker carries some form of insurance that will cover this cost.

I hope this wasnt at chateau d'ivoire. They have a watchmaker in the back and i've heard some not nice things.. He should go to Gambard if he wants work done locally or just send it to rolex toronto..I use everest jewelers on lajeunesse street..nice people.

I heard Gambard lost his affiliation as an a.d. with Rolex. Not sure why?

This would be very sad for us, I agree. For most most folks, he'll have it replaced with a new case, nice and shiny and be happy as a clam.

Gambard was pretty nice over the years to me. I heard they wanted him to invest hundreds of thousands into his store. Nice guy who treated me well

I think that's correct since it's what I heard also . They wanted him to update the store to continue being an AD . What exactly are you looking for ? Just a bezel? Ask Everest if they can order you one from Rolex to

I wish I could see the watch or photos.

One cannot speak without seeing something but I'm telling you...

Things can be repaired. If the case back was mangled...okay it's a 16750...casebacks exist...The middle case can be repaired.

Unless he held it with vice grips and took huge chunks out of the sides...and even then a good laser guy could fix that. Not advocating that but if it's merely the threading of the middle case this is not as big of an issue as it might seem.

People just don't look outside of the box much.

I agree with you completely. I would try a new back first. Then go from there. I would buy it if I came across it. But it was an elderly couple and based on the tone of the conversation, likely didnt have the same knowledge or experience as we do.

If the internal threads of the case are cross threaded or stripped how would you repair it?
