Everything is relative. Given the exchange rate in effect in 1955, a Rolex listing for 300 swiss francs, would cost about $70 US. Of course, the minimum wage in 1955 was 75 cents an hour, and even if you earned double that, for most people, a Rolex watch would have been beyond their means.

By the way, I WAS alive back then, but I wasn't paying too much attention to watches, beyond learning how to tell time so I'd know when the Mickey Mouse Club was on.

Interesting that it says no perishable items are used in construction - they still used rubber gaskets, right? Perhaps a tiny stretching of the truth... :)

After a suggestion from Old Expat Beast I'm now going to start separate threads over on the reference forum for each book/catalog so hopefully it'll be easier than having it all in one thread as you'll be able to pin point a particular piece of interest rather than wade through lots of bits :)
