This thread is totally one of my favourites ever. Like a classic car restoration from a rusty hulk rotting in a field somewhere.

Such an improvement on the dial. I also recommend MY for the bracelet restoration. I was amazed by his work.

Cheers Styles! I did rediscover it in the shed, so it must classify as a 'garage find' surely

Hi mate, yeah I got some hands from a guy here in Australia. They seem to be correct for this watch, but Im still not sure. I got them lumed to match the dial, but I am looking forward to seeing them in daylight because in the photos they dont seem to match up, so fingers crossed there.

Filipćo blew me away when he offered to send me the missing links from the bracelet. I was so worred about that when I learnt that they were all different parts. When you look online no one mentions what part of the bracelet the link they are selling is, so I was just going to ignore the parts and wear it on a leather strap like my step father. Now I have the exact three missing links. I am still so grateful for this, because it means as I can this as my step father did, from 1978 onwards. The watch is getting restored back to its post first service spec. I only have a few parts pre that service, such as the original crown and a minute hand.

The bezel and ring are not in a great way. The bezel is severely bent. It my first photos on this thread you can see the plexi and the outer ring are half off. Well that is due to someone trying to get to the watch from the front as they couldnt open up the back. There are knicks on the back of the case. In the end my watch maker is not sure if the bezel can be used at all, the ring that goes inside it has a crack where the dot is at 12. I am thinking about buying another one. My watch maker suggest an after market one, but not sure about that.

Great story, and love the enthusiasm to bring this beautiful Sub back to life.

I understand that you had some restrictions on how you wanted the dial redone, but I wonder why Michael didn't completely restore the lettering. He needed to do that anyway in some areas because of the scratches, but other areas seem incomplete. Is that an in-progress photo or the end result? Either way, a vast improvement, of course.

If it is the final product I personally kind of like the “rustic” look of the dial. It sort of pays homage to its life before the restoration.

Hi, this is the end result. I was told the work would take 6-8 weeks and it was ready in two weeks.

I can see where some of the lettering is in fact worse than before like the 'o' in Oyster and the '0' in 200m, but on the whole it is far better than I expected.

Did you have any pics of the "Ring"? imagine you're talking about the Insert, the part that has the numbers and the dot at 12 o'clock. I will say i've seen a lot of them that are cracked but still work fine, the bezel (thing with the teeth/outside ring") is really the functional part, it sits on a small spring that ratchets one direction and holds the insert in place. A lot of times the insert will have wear and discoloration but most collectors consider this part of the appeal of the overall watch.

If you have pics of the insert DEF post them, people would love to see it.

I will post some photos when I get the watch back.

I will have to wear this Brando style for a while I think as it is the metal ring thats crooked. My watch maker is working on it so we will see. Either way, there is much longer to wait, so I am pretty excited to see the outcome.

The dial is arriving today (hopefully). There was a bit of a mix up and the shipment kind of disappeared for a few days. God this process is stressful. I dont know how you guys do this as a full time hobby, I just dont have the nerves.

Anyhow, hopefully I will be able to take a look at the dial and hands in natural light and fingers crossed everything matches up. I will post some photos later today

The dial and hands are back with me. I have to say in natural light I am a lot happier. It really does look fantastic. The lume appears to be a close match but I just dont want to mess with the hands and put them on the dial just in case there was a freak gust of wind, that would be all I need.

We are on the home stretch now!!!!!

Immense improvement, but agree here. In particuar, the "L" in Rolex might benefit from some extra attention.

Hi, everyone I spoke to simply wanted to wipe the dial and repaint it from scratch. I wanted to leave things as they were and simply repair the damage, include some deep scratches. Its almost as though someone pulled the minute hand off and dragged it across the dial a few times, they were sharp deep scratches.

Perhaps in demanding this it inhibited his process which usually would allow him to use a template/stencil to apply the text. Since he couldnt do that he had to have the lettering painted by hand.

(I'm just guessing by the way....)

Its a huge improvement of course, but its not the best job I have seen or expected.
I would opted for the best finishing possible, crips writing.

Anyway, I am looking forward to see it put together. I am sure it is going to be great feeling to wear it!
