Merry Xmas or Happy Holidays?

We in Europe tend to use “Merry Xmas”or “Happy Xmas” but my US friends mostly say “Happy Holidays”.

What’s your preference?

For me, it depends who I'm talking to.

If I know it's someone who celebrates Christmas, then it's Merry Christmas. If it's someone where I don't know what they celebrate, then it's Happy Holidays. When in any doubt, it's Happy Holidays.

If I know I won't see someone between the two holidays, then: "Happy Holidays". If it is Christmas time in just a few days or it is, like today, I wish a "Merry Christmas", because the New Year is still far away

So, Merry Christmas

No point in wishing Merry Christmas to those who don’t celebrate it. But for many, this is a festive time of year, so Happy Holidays works fine.

I feel the same way. To me, "Merry Christmas" carries a tone of exclusivity and people celebrate the winter solstice (in the northern hemisphere) in many different ways. "Happy Holidays" is inclusive and works better for me (raised in the Anglican Community).

Christmas and other winter solstice celebrations piggybacked on ancient pagan celebrations. The shortening of daylight hours changing to the longer period of daylight represented death and rebirth to the ancients.

It has Christ in it and it’s his birthday so I don’t see it being called anything but Christmas.

Actually, there's a lot of debate over the birthday of Jesus. It wasn't until Pope Julius officially asserted in 350 AD that Jesus was born on December 25 that that date was generally accepted, but the assertion is dubious or unfounded.

I'm a Merry Christmas guy myself.

As they say "Let's keep Christ in Christmas"

Of course I wouldn't say it to someone I feel that maybe offended by it.

Even if folks dont celebrate, Christmas is still a day on the calendar. I see nothing wrong with wishing it be a merry one regardless of one’s denomination.

I like the Happy Christmas that our English friends use.

For many, Happy Holidays works from the start of Chanukah through Epiphany.

Desiring never to offend, it's best to refrain from wishing anyone a merry or happy anything.
It's the only decent thing to do . . . . or not do.

Was it me or was there "less" Christmas this year?

What I mean is less seasonal advertising, less Christmas music in stores, less decorations...just less?

I say Merry Christmas, and if someone from another culture/faith wishes me well for their festival in their terms, I take that as a friendly gesture and with gratitude.
