1680 red sub 5 mil ser no update
Hi
Still a mystery here. The watch comes back from rolex uk/Switzerland after a full check out with paperwork to prove. They replaced the bracelet as non original (non rolex link!! All the rest rolex) paperwork will show serial numbers etc the rolex AD dealer & rolex themselves have no problem & agree the watch is original. I really dont know what to think about this one. I dont wanna hunt down another single red to complete my collection but still not sure. Can rolex look at a watch and not tell me its correct? Bearing in mind the bracelet issue bothered them. The AD have been great, going above and beyond in every way to help me with this one. I know the red face should not be in a 5 mil case but its there and rolex have no problem with it. Wierd or does anyone have similar tales to tell? |

Rolex doesn't like aftermarket parts, as long as everything is original then they don't seem to care too much.

To be honest Rolex do not seem to have much idea when it comes to vintage and as has already been mentioned as long as the parts are correct for the watch, so early or later parts and they are genuine they don't seem to mind!

Comments
Thanks for the input. Just seems kinda weird. They will charge the earth to service Red models but will not comment or even give a report. So as a collector you seem to have to make your own mind up, or seek guidance, as there seems to be no record of models against serial number that is set in stone. I have had other vintage models in for service where they have said the watch had the wrong/incorrect part for year and model but red's seem to be in a league of their own. They will tell you what parts are genuine and go so far as to service the watch but are very brief with their descriptions/reports.

Their knowledge when it comes to vintage is limited and probably dependant on who touched it. I am guessing it didn’t go past their Heritage service?

Heritage service
Hi
I am not sure. Rolex UK recommended it went to Rolex Switzerland. But the quote for full service etc was between £1600 to £5000. I thought that was a little too much really. As the watch keeps great time and is in great condition I could not justify the cost just so someone could shed some light on my watch. |

I may be late to the party, but this is surely nothing other than a white 1680 into which someone has at some point fitted a genuine, earlier red writing dial? This would then be a watch with a dial that is genuine but not original to the watch.
I've had such watches. They may be enjoyed as found, but from a commercial point of view I find value must be measured in the sum of parts rather than as if a period correct Red Sub. H

Another possibility: a red writing Submariner which has had a service replacement mid-case. The serial number would show up on Rolex's system as a legitimate repair without raising any red flags...

Rolex doesn’t have trained vintage professionals....if it’s all original parts not like a red sub dial in a 16800 case I’m sure they don’t care...as a whole they hate vintage Rolex because it takes money out their pocket

A 5-million red Sub serial will always be a watch with a story. It wouldn't be for me but could very well be someone else's "cup of tea."

Actually when you wear it everyday, you wont get to see the serial.
You can just enjoy the watch as is. I have a 1675 5mil serial with MK2 dial and some people say its ok, some say its not ok but I still wear the watch everyday and enjoy it. :) |

I think unless you have allready purchased the watch ? , myself I would find another example as Haywood,MW,John,Lee have commented and covered all my concerns .I would suggest you pop across to www.drsd.com ask Ed Delgado what he would think of a 5m serial number Red Sub ?
I am not knocking the watch but think 5m is very late for a Red Sub , others are far more qualified to comment but you have had some very good advice above If you own it just wear it and enjoy owning it |

Wouldn't a service case be in the mid 4m s/n range?

Pics
I totally agree with all comments and does seem more like a genuine white with genuine red face etc to be noted is the patina of the hands/face etc and the fact I bought it for a lot less than current white money. I would also like to add Rolex were extremely interested in the watch. They gave a great report and response to it. They have also seen my MK3 DRSD and love the fact I collected the red models. I also got the new anniversary model for my collection as well as some amazing offers for bracelets etc as I have the original folded links ones for my watches in the boxes and use 93150 ones for day to day wear. So I was not too bothered about the watch given its cost. I was more surprised that all the parts are genuine so if needs be I can insert a period correct white face. I love the look and will wear it as is and continue to look for a more "genuine" single red and continue to enjoy my watch with a story. May I just say that this forum is a great place with very open attitudes and opinions that you don't get on every make forums (I collect Panerai/Omega also) So credit to this forum and its members for taking the time to educate and offer advice/opinions while still keeping an open mind.
I hope the pics come through! rps20171103_130252.jpg rps20171103_130612.jpg rps20171103_160241.jpg |
