Does the no date sub actually fly under the radar?

Wondering about experiences on the no date sub vs the date bubble version. I hear a lot of people say the no date flies under the radar and want to know if this is true. Does the cyclops really make that big of a difference in who notices? Especially if we are talking about the new ceramic versions. Anyone who has experience with both date and no date have any inputs on differences in getting noticed? Thanks.

Welcome to the forum! Search function is your friend. I own the 14060M Submariner because I like it the most. My advice would be to find what you like the most through research, buy it, and then wear it. Don’t worry weather others like it or will notice it. Just wear what you like and enjoy it. That’s what this hobby is all about.

In my experience, no. A sub is a statement piece and anyone who matters will know what it is whether or not it has the cyclops. I suppose it could be like 5% more under the radar but that is absolute hogwash and means nothing.

Afraid not. It’s the satellite the radar tracks.

Not at all. The Submariner is probably one of the MOST noticed and noticeable references out there — both to watch enthusiasts and ordinary everyday people who don’t care.

I believe it does fly under the radar a bit. It does not have the cyclops and there are so many homages. Many people have no idea it is a Rolex.

As long as when you throw it hard enough you don't break the certain ceiling of radar detection, then yes it'll definitely fly under the radar :-)

I don’t hang out in crowds where people notice watches. Out in the wild, only a couple of times has anyone noticed my SubC. I owned both date and no date. I notice the change on my wrist (love the cyclops and having the date) but that is about it.

I think in general people don’t notice watches but the Sub has a shine to it with the ceramic bezel and lack of AR coding on the crystal. It doesn’t have PLCs but still a relatively shiny watch.

The ceramic Sub stands out like a Porsche 911. It’s such a recognizable design that even those that know nothing about watches, probably could identify a Sub from its popular culture status.

Having worn the 14060M for 10 years, I'd have to say no - it is a noticeable watch. With the 114060 ceramic, this Submariner carries even more presence - cyclops or no cyclops.

I'd say the new line of Oyster Perpetual is more discreet, if that's what you are looking for.

Agree with the others, the overall look is pretty indistinguishable with the cyclops version for non WIS people.

I have to note though that I don't recall seeing a no-date sub in the wild, they are always the date versions.

The first time I saw a non-date Submariner, I had to ask the owner about it, as I'd never seen one without the date.

He assured me that it was real.

I was impressed enough that I eventually bought one myself.

I cannot say that it flew under radar as the lack of a cyclops is what made me notice.

Nobody notices your watch, Submariner or not, unless they’re into watches - and you’re not getting under those peoples radar.

Just to be clear, this notion is very wrong. Especially in certain professional environments.

Just because no one says anything doesn't mean that they haven't seen your sub or made their first impression judgments about you already.

Does the cyclops really make that big of a difference in who notices? Nope

A Rolex Sub is Iconic watch and will be noticed. If you are really concerned with being noticed and don't want that then I would buy a different watch/brand. IMHO

Experience has shown that the Cyclops does make a difference.
But it is seemingly a patchy experience.
That is unless the majority of observers either are well mannered or discrete or alternately they think the watch is a fake because they wouldn't know the real thing anyway or they notice but couldn't care less either way.

As far as the no date Sub goes it does, and it doesn't fly under the radar.
It depends upon many variables, including the observer. See above.

In over thirty years of ownership, the number of people "noticing" my 16800 has continued to decline. It is now just one of many watches that at 40mm do not grab much attention. As nice a watch as it is, and for me, a milestone purchase, in the "watch world" it is no big deal. Buy which one you want.

People used to recognise the no date flat lens sub but now they just see it as a Tudor black bay 58
Save yourself some money and get the BB58 or if you want it recognised as a SUB get a SUB date with cyclops

Let’s be honest, no one notices your watch unless they’re a fan.

A Sub & Sub Date will attract the same attention as a Daytona, Royal Oak or Patek, which is: None.

Just buy the watch you love and enjoy it.

In NYC? A sub, "under the radar"? I don't think so, regardless of the cyclops.

On second thought, it might get lost in the sea of subs there.

These questions are so funny. No one notices your ss sport watch, no one cares. In fact i believe most non wis people will find ss sport watches ugly and cheap looking. Sure, they know the Rolex brand but go and try to read the brand/logo on someone watch. Its not easy and you need to stare quite a bit. If you want people to notice your watch get a two tone or a gold one.

Maybe a different story with salespersons. Often they will try to scale you and have a quick look at your clothes, shoes and yes maybe your watch.

The average person won't notice your watch at all, let alone if it's a date or no-date!

People that know what it is will know. Everyone else, not so much. A lot of watches are out there that stand out more than a SS Rolex. If you want one, get it. If you own one, wear it.

To be honest, I feel like the term "under the radar" is one we WIS use here on the forum, and is really more applicable to us when describing watches we all notice to some varying degree.

For example, if I saw a sub (date or non) out in the wild, I would def notice. Another example, my wife and I were out at breakfast one morning and the waitress just oohed and aahed over my wife's watch...a cheap fashion watch. I was wearing a gold sub.

So...bottom line, I think we lose a little perspective around here. And the term "under the radar" is really more of a WIS term, as opposed to the general public.

Totally agree! Unless you’re wearing a 55mm golden color invicta then you’re not under the radar and everyone notices

Putting a watch on a NATO or rubber strap will dress it down or attract even less attention. I agree with what many have said, watch people will always make a glance and know a sub when they see it (date cyclops or not).

It took me a couple years of getting used to wearing a Rolex and some people noticing. You get comfortable with wearing whatever you like and letting people prejudge you, accept you, or think otherwise. Buy the watch that makes you feel good and wear it with a smile.

I have several subs but this one seems to not get much attention and is super comfortable:

Date or not, a SS sub will never be a flashy noticeable watch, don't worry, just buy it and feel free
