Nice post, thanks. I recall reading about Schaller in Peter Matthiesen's Snow Leopard. Interesting to hear about his watch; I missed the adverts.

My friend, people would always talk, you can't stop them so do what you like, whatever makes you happy especially if you have the money to do it. In general

If anyone chastises you for owning a Rolex, just ask them if they bought their spouse a diamond engagement/wedding ring. If they did, then chastise them for wasting money when they could have purchased a less expensive synthetic stone. That'll shut 'em up.

Ask him back if he drives a car, if he does drive a car tell him how many people he could have fed for that money

Who cares what others think! Buy what makes you happy at a price point you can "afford". Be logical and remove emotions when determining what you can afford. Most Rolex are a no brainer due to value retention.

Unless people take a vow of poverty and live like a Monk for the good of mankind, these kinds of virtue signaling tirades are empty and hypocritical.

I’m sure that professors salary could feed many poor people also. I hate that colleges are now full of activists disguised as educators. How dare that professor shame a student for spending their hard earned money on something for themselves.

Also the price of a two tone Sub or any Rolex for that matter wouldn’t go very far to combat any type of wealth inequality in the US or any other country for that matter. I assure you if that ever happened to me I would be booted from that class in short order.

I tell strangers in public it is fake to end the conversation. I’d proudly tell any a-hole chastising me for owning a luxury item I worked my ass of got exactly what I paid for it.

I work with others in the middle to upper middle income bracket in healthcare. It’s a decent living but I’m not exactly rich. Still as I have no wife or kids I can spend my money on things I enjoy. I’ve been in meetings where my cars have been brought up as kind of a joke. Today for the first time I wore a Rolex to work (two tone datejust). I usually wear a Tag Heuer which aren’t exactly a cheap watch but they’ve never been noticed. Today two people commented on my watch saying how nice it was. I’m sure it’ll be around the office by next week.

I love academicians and their sanctimonious attitude.

I have the misfortune of having a festering sewer of these useless cretins not far from my home.

At work once when i was in between junior and mid level position

Then i state- we make approximately the same money, live in the same city i have a rolex, and you dont. At some point, i saved up enough to buy myself a quality watch while youve spent it elsewhere. So tell me, have you saved up alot, if so, how many african families have you fed or plan tovfeed with that saving? If not, then somewhere in your lifestyle, you must be alot more indulgent- why didnt you feed poor kids around the world?

Isn’t that unfortunately the case with most things in life when higher value things are discussed in that way?

Hahaha, same here. I tell them that their cars are more expensive than mine
and that my bicycles are more important to me than my cars. My bicycles are making me look 20 years younger and stronger, my cars do the opposite.

I justify my watch habit as it’s the only nice thing I buy for myself... well, except for cars and art and land and bbq smokers.

Ask the prof if he is against grade inequality. Should we take a grade from the student who worked and got a B and give it to the one that didn't and got a D so both now get Cs?

No doubt heroes of the OP prof. Here's a photo of Castro wearing two Rolex watches at the same time: https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/fid...-watches-1963/

Yes, unfortunately it boils down to the person being jealous. Nothing feels worse than achieving a goal or becoming successful and discovering that the people around you don’t feel proud or positive about it – but rather, they feel jealous. In your example it tells more about the professors inferiority than anything else and in order to make himself feel superior to you he feels it necessary to humiliate and put you down in front of the class. Everyone has felt this unpleasant emotion at least once in their lives. Never rise to the bait or react to people like this - this is what they want.

This is an apt quote for such occasions "Walk away from people who put you down. Walk away from fights that will never be resolved. Walk away from trying to please people who will never see your worth. The more you walk away from things that poison you soul, the healthier you will be" - Shaista Saba

Nope - wouldn't happen. I don't typically brandish my watches in a manner that provokes conversation about them.

I had someone tell me that assholes drive Porsches and wear gold Rolexes while I was filling my car with gas. The coward got very quiet when I approached him and asked him to repeat that because I wasn’t sure I heard it correctly.

When you grow up piss poor like I did, you just don't feel guilty about wearing a Rolex or driving around in a $75,000 BMW.

And please don't accuse me of being insensitive. Every time I see a homeless person, I give them a $20 bill, and the wife and I donate a lot to charity. Not just money, but time too...
