Coffee Machines
My coffee machine at home just died on me, and I'm having a hard time deciding on which of the everyday cartridge type ones to get.. there just so many out there these days.
just off the top of my head: Tassimo Keurig Nespresso Illy Can anyone recommend or steer me away from anyone of these machines |

I have a nespresso machine and really like it. Their coffee is very good too, although the selection is a hair on the limited side. The model I have is the lattissima, which was about $300.
I have a Keurig in my office. The coffee is nothing special from all the brands I've tried, but the packaging is convenient. It works and the machines are cheap. |

I have a better idea give up coffee!! Saves money, you don't get jittery after your 4th cup, and at 3:30-4:00 when everyone you work with is crashing because their adrenal glands are exhausted from being over stimulated due to excessive caffeine, you can laugh at them and stay productive for the last half of the day.

I like Nespresso but is a limited type of coffee. If you should consider buying one, I highly recommend them. We seldom use the big expresso machine now. For more regular style coffee, I've heard people say the keurig coffee is ok, lots to choose from & as Matt says, the machines are cheap. I prefer the drip style machine & have a Cuisinart Brew Central. It's short enough & fits well under upper cabinets & slender enough to not take up a lot of room. Makes great coffee. I'm not that familiar with the Tassimo style yet. There is a machine where my mom is & I've just bought a bunch of cartridges (not sure what they are called) & will be trying them out this weekend. Either way... Enjoy your coffee! |

We have a Keurig at home. Stopped using the pre-packaged pods a while ago and now just use a screen/filter pod filled with whatever coffee we want. It still comes out kind of weak, but it is super convenient for just one cup.
My wife recently got a french press for about $25. SO MUCH BETTER! We use the same coffee and get a much better cup. Takes about 5 minutes to make in the morning and we both can fill our travel mugs from it. The only time we use the Keurig anymore is with company. Hot water, coffee grounds, pour, rinse, repeat. Simple! |

What about a french press? That's all I've used for years and it makes great coffee.

Thanks for the replies guys.. I guess the decision will be based on:
1 - the price of the machine 2 - how easy to get the coffee cartridges 3 - coffee variety & taste |

French Press: http://www.amazon.com/SterlingPro-Co...s=french+press
If you go Keurig, these are the refillable cartridges we use. http://www.amazon.com/Permanent-Filt...eusable+k-cups. I think we got a few packs at Bed Bath and Beyond with those coupons they always send in the mail. Cost about 8 bucks for a pack of 4. Buy/grind your own coffee. |

Buy a La Pavoni and a decent grinder and just keep practicing until you can pull exceptional shots.
Alternatively buy an AeroPress, pour over coffee maker or siphon coffee maker. Of the above I believe the siphon filter produces the best cup. |

If price is the most important to you then consider a small 4 cups or single brew machine. These machines sell for under $20. The ones with the built-in mesh filter (as opposed to paper) are great in terms of convenience and savings. If the machine breaks in a year, its cheap enough just to buy another one. I have cheapo Bella single brew coffee maker that I use daily for the last two years and is still going strong.
If you insist on a cartridge machine, I think a machine (not necessarily a Keurig) that use K-cups would offer you more choices in coffee/tea selection. I also have a Keurig but rarely use it because it takes to long to heat up. I also dislike the fact that it uses a water filter. Although the filtered water may be nice in the beginning, I'm always paranoid about what may be collecting on the cartridge after a few weeks. |

IMHO a French Press is the purest form of coffee making. That and a SS kettle with copper bottom is all you need.
But if it must be a cartridge/pod machine, choose one that gives you greatest range of coffee choices. Remember the VCR battles between Beta and VHS? It doesn't matter which is better - just which one will survive in the market. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Look at the Gaggia classic. I have had espresso from machines ranging from 50 dollars to 25 thousand plus. I would put that machine against any of them. It's semi automatic so it won't break easily. Once you go fully automatic , the more electrical the more things there are to break

That La Pavoni is beautiful.
Most 'good brand name' Capsule/Pod machines produce coffee of similar quality. The determinate is of course the coffee in the pod, not the machine. Though not environmentally friendly, the Capsule/Pod machines are hugely popular due to their convenience. A proper Espresso machine will produce much better coffee but requires much more time to do it, and this is simply not acceptable to busy people who just want a quick hit in the morning before leaving for work. I used to defer my morning coffee to a stop at a good cafe on my way to work rather than settle for an inferior cup, swallowed in a rush at home. Nowdays I have the time to make great coffee.

I have a couple of Saeco automatics and Nespressos at the office but I like the old fashioned way at home.
There is only 5 grams of coffee in the Nespresso pods and maybe 8 grams in the Mio. The Breville has 24 grams for two cups and that and makes an excellent brew which can be modified to suit. The grinder has very fine control.
