Why is the Milgauss so unpopular?

Is it the thickness, the thunder hands, the price, the heft?

Please share your thoughts on why the modern milgauss gets no love, while the vintage milgauss gets lots of love?

Orange not a popular colour, squiggle second hand is not popular, pcls unpopular generally, no date, thick and clunky, very colorful so not great as an only piece to some, thick case and Faraday cage is a useless complication...at least you can time a pizza with a sub. I could go on...small crown...its the only sports watch to have the crappy date just clasp (no flip lock)....etc etc.

That being said I think it's a lovely watch.

As for vintage...it is only popular because it was so unpopular when it was in circulation .

It's a nice watch but I guess people in the market for a first or other Tolex have lots of choices. I'd much rather look toward a Datejust or an Explorer personally.

It was quite popular when Rolex re-introduced the watch some 8+ years ago. However over the years, interest has waned. You can do a search for threads here from 2008 or so and it was quite well received back then.

Probably price as much as anything. You can get the Explorer II with two complications for the same price.

I, too, never thought about it, until I realized for roughly the same price of the modern Explorer, I can get a clear crystal milgauss.

I still prefer the look and feel of the explorer, but the Milgauss intrigues me...

I can't imagine ever choosing to wear it over my other watches on any given day. Specifically I think the second hand is cartoonish.

Unpopular? Is that a personal opinion or based on sales? Really enjoy and appreciate mine.

Apologies. The better word would be under-appreciated.

This is based on its receptiveness in the second hand market. I am, in fact, considering to get one. I think it's awesome.

It's a fun watch. But also semi dressy. It shows the character of the function it was designed for.

I was not a fan of the design, but it has grown on me and I appreciate it for what it is and is able to do.

I had the GV model and sold it a while back. Kind of wish I had hung on to it.

I happen to think it's not a very "popular" model and I don't see any reason for anyone to feel disrespected or offended by that. It's a beautiful watch with some amazing history.

IMO it's frankly not as popular as more traditional sport models (like the submariner, GMT, explorer series) or the OPs and datejusts in the lineup. Possibly because the Milgauss falls between the cracks of the major watch types. It's like a science watch with polished/dressy features and sporty colors, a lighting bolt second hand and no visible functions.

Again, just based on the threads you see pop up daily here on TRF it def doesn't seem as popular to me and there's nothing wrong with that.

Personally, I just can't come to grips with the thunderbolt second hand. Seems a little gimmicky to me. That said, I have a friend who has one and it looks amazing on his wrist.

The Milgauss is unbelievably cool. If I were to acquire a second Rolex, it would be a Milgauss -- believe me.

It's a very nice reference, but the opportunity cost of getting a Milgauss is pretty high, unless you have multiple Rolex models. In other words, the price makes other models in the line-up more attractive for most.

That doesn't make it unpopular.

Not a fan of these threads in general. To each their own.

I like it. The second hand is a little unexpected 'Rock & Roll'. With that said, I do find it a bit pricey.

not a fan at all. but to each their own. if it was toned down a bit ala vintage Milgauss watches, id def be interested but i am just not a fan of the color schemes on the watch.

It's not for me, but I don't find it really unattractive either. My thinking is it is such a 'niche' watch. The anti-mag properties are impressive, but how many customers really need that feature? And before everyone jumps all over me about having a GMT and not being a pilot, or a sub and not being a diver, those watches have other useful features, I.e. The second time zone and a movable bezel. The Milgauss? not so much.

although i don't have one, I think it is a piece in Rolex's stable that gives it the creativity, the quirkiness, the flair, that it needs. It stands on its own merits.
heck, thats why Omega created the Milgauss..:)..at least that's what I think.

As always, it's subject to personal whims, but:

1. New models have the Parachrom hairspring, providing increased resistance to thermal variations, shocks -- and electromagnetic fields. Not sure what value the Milgauss adds to this, other than a pleasing aesthetic.

2. PCLs are not my cup of tea. Neither is the polished bezel.

3. For the same price point, there are other models that offer more complications.

If it weren't for those detractors, I'd be all over it.

A Gv was my first Rolex, mainly because it didn't scream 'Rolex'. A lovely watch that has a sense of humour in the design..not exactly a well-known trait with Rolex.
And, if you think about it, there will always be more and less popular models. I own a Cellini Price, how is that for an 'unpopular' Rolex! Sold a 114060 to get it.

I saw 2 ladies wearing them in downtown Miami over this weekend. They looked like aspiring models in their early 20's. I thought they were hot on the girls...
