Been awhile: need advice

So I’m thinking about selling/trading my Midsize Datejust in toward a yellow gold President. My midsize is only about a year old. My question for you all is - is it stupid to sell a fairly new watch to purchase an older one? To get in my budget range I will have to buy a fairly older president. Not sure if this is a wise investment choice? I also don’t want to spend so much on something that could crap out in a few years...

Thanks for reading!

I think it’s perfectly fine to do a trade like this.

Provided you bought your DJ right you should be able to make this trade and not lose too much. Older DD’s can be bad for decent prices.

President 10 times out of 10.... I’ve seen some modern 36mm variations selling in the 16k-17k range. Deals can be had on them if you’re patient

If it were me, I wouldn’t get one that’s too old. I’d just wait a little longer while saving if needed. I feel like I’d want a more modern Rolex for a PM piece. That’s just me though. You can’t go wrong and a vintage piece isn’t going to crap out so long as it’s not abused.

This is fine - the thing to consider is if you like the older version. Many of us on the forum enjoy the old Sub models etc.. If you get one that was cared for, in good shape and serviced it should outlast all of us :)

How old is the DD that you're considering trading towards?

Both models, DD and DJ, are amazing watches. Personally, DD is one of my favourites. If I would be you, I would go for DD. Loosing money is secondary thing, it’s all about feeling. Maby try first and then you know...?

I do love DD's but depends on how old the DD is.. If the dj is fairly new I might be in the minority but I'd keep it :)

I would make the trade. Best values are 18038 and 18238.

Keep in mind that there is not a "crap out date" on Rolex or other mechanical watches for that matter. The next generation gets to enjoy them if they are properly serviced. Just enjoy them and wear the heck out of them.

As to which to buy - just be careful selling and buying - you will not be out too much - remember you are buying the seller more than the watch.

I can see why you would want to make the move to a DD. Do your research and see what is in the market from a reliable source and what you can get for your DJ. I would make sure that I bought an example that was complete with box and papers and also one that had been serviced, by Rolex, in the last few years. You could add on a service to the cost should you go with a watch with no know history. I would also recommend looking at the YG Date Just. I have a friend that went that route over the DD and I have to say it is a good looking watch and he paid a lot less, at the time, for it over a DD. Get the facts and make an informed decision.

I think it's a good move. My only caution would be, especially if you're buying an older president, make sure the bracelet is in good shape in terms of wear and stretch.

If it's worn and needs any kind of work done, that bracelet can be very expensive to fix, or god forbid, replace. IMO, that's more of a concern to you than the watch "crapping out."

Good luck!

Thank you all for your replies!

My DJ is less than 2 years old.

Is the early 90s too old for a DD? I definitely would not go with a stretched bracelet or anything with major wear. I’m going for signs of minor wear. Ok, so I should ask for proof when the watch was last serviced if I find one I like? Thanks for the tips!!

I haven’t posted before but have a fair amount of experience in buying and selling Rolex’s. If you are looking for a 26mm size, which is a very small watch, they can be purchased for around $5500-$6000 in good condition. Those would be date only instead of day-date. If you’re looking for a 36mm size, which would be typically considered a midsize, a day-date in very good condition can be purchased for around $10,000-$12,000 range. I’m sure there will be differing opinions on price range from other members but I have purchased both models recently in that range. For myself, I always try to stick with a watch that has the original warranty papers and box.

Depends on how old the DD is. One year old DJ or 10 year old DD? Definitely DJ for me
