Right on. This is a requirement unless you're living in a country with significant amount of land/trees separating you from the neighbors. In most scenarios, lack of HOA combined with a single member of a community who has a creative interpretation of tastes and rules will ruin your days.

Live in an okay managed HOA for > 10 years and enjoyed it. The key is to know what you're subscribing too.

Oh the old purple house big lie. NO ONE wants to paint their house purple, and to your other points your town should have ordnances for cars/ boats/ etc. on lots. If not, and you think your HOA will save you, a diamond surrounded in excrement is still a diamond no one wants. Meaning if you live in a crap town it doesn't matter about an HOA because that town wouldn't be a high demand location anyhow.

Hey man, if you like paying people to tell you what to do. You can send me a check and I'll tel you how to live your life, and I'll be cheaper then your dues.

I drive by this house, almost, every day...

Based on the weather report, likely blowing/shoveling snow.

If an agreement can’t be reached with the new bright neighbor, research your Planning Commission and city/county development guidelines.

Also, visit your code enforcement office to find the original and/or updated C1/2 zoning case for that neighboring property. There may already be pre-existing conditions about light intrusion among other issues (including the type of business being registered/licensed at the property)

I agree with everyone that a conversation could be worthwhile. Having the advance knowledge of where you stand legally can’t hurt.

But I noticed the type of fixture may not permit redirecting the angle steep enough to reduce the impact on your front windows. Good luck in your quest.

MJ - you could paint that house any colour and it would still look great.
The problems are the ones that look like a Barn to start with.

Keen to hear how the OP has gone with his negotiations.
(proceed on the assumption that he is a reasonable person - prepare for the possibility he is not)

I read your post just before going running earlier. You inspired me to go by one of my favorite houses!

With the appropriate music, this house could look quite....foreboding.
(Why) Do ALL American houses look like they're the location for a horror movie?

(kind of)

You guys got me. 1 out of thousands of house are painted purple.

I've changed my tune. I should pay 1000's of dollars a year to make sure there are only white-beige, grey-beige and beige-beige houses.
The one house that looks 4000+ sq. ft must be worth 10 bucks because of the color?

Feels good to live in America now Land of the fee, home of depraved.

Haha I’ve never lived in a HOA and never would. My sister did and they were POS’s.
Zillow’s estimates this house at 1.4mm btw, not exactly an undesirable neighborhood.
You just seem so mad in your post about purple houses I had to respond that I see one almost daily

So my ex she has a house in an hoa neighborhood. Let’s just say unconfirmed, there was an incredible amount of drama. The state stepped in to control the finances for a while and I guess it is also part of an investigation. The drama was intense with everyone choosing sides. Nextdoor was like reading the tabloids.

The lack of response makes me think the OP took matters into his own hands

I had a similar issue however I was dealing with a government street light. Surprisingly my complaint was taken seriously and an engineer visit from the authorities and the street light vanished in 24 hours.
