After a day at the beach, wtf?

Three week old watch, swam at the sea for a while and was in the pool an hour.



Seems like scratches on the crystal, can sand do this?

Unless water intruded, supposed to be 200m, but none of crowns is screw-in.

Really bummed right now.

does this have AR coating on the exterior of the crystal?
if so, it's likely scratches of that, not the sapphire itself.

regardless, as you've said, rather disappointing for 3-week old watch.

Yes I do, bought new at AD.

I thought it could be plexiglass, but feels like sapphire, we’ll see.

Looks like external AR coating, that's why i prefer only internal AR like Rolex does. Pretty bad for one normal-sounding outing though, and so new -- I'd hope the AD helps you get that crystal recoated/replaced so you can have a nice watch for awhile and know to take care in the future.

Not sure if these sort of things are covered by warranty. If not, you might as well experiment with the following suggestions before taking it for repair. My suggestion is to buy some Cape may polish cloth and use it to remove the ar coating

Firstly - this is a stunning JLC.

And wow - I'm surprised to see that level of scratching, my first instinct is this can't be scratches in the actual sapphire crystal itself.

In theory sand could do this, but only if it contained particulates which where harder than sapphire (so a 9+ on the Mohs scale)....you guessed it, only one abundant natural material which fits that bill. So unless you were at diamond beach then it is either plastic glass (but surely not on a new watch?), or scratches in the AR. I don't see any scratches on the polished bezel to speak of though which one might expect if the glass is so heavily damaged.

Please do keep us updated of how this pans out.

AR coating scratch. I got the same thing on a Breitling i use to own. I have no idea if that JLC has AR coating, but it looks like it does.

I actually took it in and had a new sapphire crystal installed as it bugged me looking at the scratches. Not a warranty issue and they really cant strip the coating off and re apply so its a new crystal if the brand fixes it.

weird, it really looks like scratches!

However how is the overall feeling of this watch? The rubber strap, the buckle etc.!
Sorry to ask for this in this topic, but every review online basicly says the same things...

That's really weird. It looks like AR coating scratches but it must be condensation. My rule is that if it doesn't have a screw-down crown it doesn't get near water, regardless of the rating. Definitely take it to the dealer and show them the various pictures. Hopefully there aren't issues with the movement but there very well might be.

Blimey this has really made me think. I was going to take my white bremont solo on a white rubber strap for my beach and pool activities. Lots of AR coating and no screw down crown! maybe I will be better advised to take my sub.

Not expected from such a nice watch. If it is condensation you have an issue. Get it sorted out immediately with the AD and JLC. Please let us know how this works out.

Any water inside means full service. I bet in this case the warranty repairs include the case/crown update so that it is water resistant, movement swap and potentially dial/hands swap if they have been damaged by the water vapour.

Sound like there’s been a bit of problem with this in the past. I wonder if they carry service over to owners who are past warranty of this is a known problem

The only AR coating Rolex user is under the cyclops, well it’s the internal side of the crystal but only covers the area of the cyclops.

A friend is a watchmaker and I took it to him first, without opening of course he tested the WR in the vacuum machine and it passed the test at 20 bar.

Then he tested in another machine that actually tests with water and there it failed at 3 bar, a tiny amount of water is coming in through the bezel where it meets the crystal, not through the crown.

So maybe the movement is safe.

He told me that it could be a faulty gasket or poor assembly, in any case I took it back to the AD already.

Got the watch back from Richemont, the AD couldn't articulate what they did to it...

Will take in the water shortly again, hope this time it performs.
