Paying in full in advance
I expressed an interest in a new LV with a dealer whom I have bought from in the recent past. I was told that I would need to pay for it in full and that they would then order it and hope to deliver it to me within 90 days.
Last time around I told them what I wanted, waited for it to arrive and then paid for it the same day that it arrived, and so I ought to be on their non tire kicker list. And even if I did flake on the order this is not a hard watch to sell to someone else..... So I gotta ask....Is this the latest new strategy for pissing people off and pushing them away? A deposit is one thing, but 9k now for a watch in 90 days...…….?! |

Strange situation to me-they carry no risk 'ordering' this watch because it's in high demand, so there's no reason they really need a deposit from you. If the watch doesn't get there in 90 days and you demand your deposit back, they've bought themselves a 3-month interest-free loan at the possible expense of losing customer.

I wouldn’t. 90 days I don’t believe and if you didn’t buy it it’s not like there isn’t a line of other people ready to buy it. Deposit in this situation I will never understand

I wouldn’t like it.
But I’d do it if I was asked to

Our local AD wants 50% down non-refundable. This is why I’ve been cultivating a relationship with an out of state AD!

Sounds like they are testing you and seeing if you are a flipper. They can't order this from Rolex with a time frame, so they probably have one.

Paying in full in advance
90 days is a LONG time to part with that amount of cash
Esp since the AD really has no idea when and what timepieces they will get. They’re “hoping” LV will arrive in that time. It could be much longer !! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

They want you to pay for something they **hope** to deliver in 90 days?
No thanks. |

When I inquired about a watch from Tourneau who I bought from before, they asked for a full deposit to help cut down on the serious/non serious names on their list.

I'd try another AD and if you don't find a better deal go back to the AD and, pay in advance for the LV, otherwise, forget about it.

Wouldn't bother me, but it would have to be refundable and I'd want a guarantee of the arrival date. I wouldn't part with that much money for "We'll get it sometime maybe," but as long as there was a reasonably firm date I'd be fine with it.

In today's climate, I would do it. But on day 91, it had better be on my wrist.

Par for the course in some AD’s in Toronto. Demanding full payment via bank draft only to even get on the list for high demand models. Lists are so long they’re not even taking orders for BLNR, LV or Daytona C either.
People here have no problem paying months in advance for a watch with no guarantee delivery date.

That's a chump move by the dealer for people that are, well, chumps.

I have a few ADs I talk with from time to time, one quite regular. They all have told me they get call everyday from all over the country from people looking for all the hot models. If they placed an order for every call that came in and some how, magically Rolex delivered they would have a ton of surplus watches.
One dealer told me a while back his Daytona list was at 17, but if he called everyone on the list and told them to come pick up their watch, maybe 4 would show up. The AD that I actually placed my 500LN order with required a 50% deposit. I stroked them a check on the spot for the full package. I wanted them to know I was serious. I don’t mind not having the money, that’s kinda the point, I want the watch. Just my .02 |

Never heard of prepay. 20% deposit is average, acceptable...

I'd do it, particularly if I couldn't find it elsewhere and it was a suggested list price. ADs are on the look out for flippers.

I know this dealer well enough that I am certain that they don't have one on hand to 'test' me with.
And yes, requesting a deposit is reasonable. Requesting 100% pre-payment from a proven serious / non flipping recent customer not so much I don't think. It's subjective of course as the replies here show, but I'm saying no to this deal. |

Why do so many people play this game with dealers and Rolex when there is no shortage of the 5 digit sports watches around? Yes, they're used now but so what? IMO, they are far better looking without the blingy PCL and polished lugs on some models. I know the bracelet is said to be improved with easier fit adjustments and some of the movements have been changed about but if you get 2-3 seconds a day from a 5 digit, is it really worth thousands of dollars to maybe gain one second better accuracy? If you prefer the 6 digit references, that's fine but look at the lunacy involved to acquire one at far above MSRP.
To me, this whole thing is madness. I'm sure I'll get insulted by some here but think about it. |

Good grief. I assume you have the cash in a low interest account. Most of my cash is earning 1.6%, but I have plenty of cash earning 0.1-.3%! Aren't these watches selling at least a $2k premium? So at 1% you are spending about $20 bucks to get $2k extra value... It's silly to not do it IMO.

I can understand a small non-refundable deposit for a special order. Maybe 10% tops, as they will easily be able to sell the watch if you back out.
100% up front is unreasonable without some sort of performance clause on their part. What do they give you if they can't deliver in 90 days??? A 1% discount for each day it's late? If that were the case, I might got for it. |

I would not pay full price in advance.
That's ridiculous. Fifty-percent is reasonable if, and only if, the watch in question is guaranteed to have my name on it, and even then I would have to have absolute trust in the AD, based on significant experience. Personally, ninety days is too long, regardless of any other factors.
