Yes, that’s the watch in the mail rn. I had it on consignment with a buddy in a bigger city and I decided that enough time had passed and to ship it back. Unfortunately he sent it using the government run mailing services. Now I have a buyer for it but that watch isn’t even with me yet haha

Have a mate of yours call this watchmaker about a watch, and see if he’s accepting new work. If he is, you need to get down there and get your watch back stat.

I'm starting to see posts from members of Australian forums who're experiencing similar communication issues with the watchmaker in question. A good reputation can be ruined quickly if he doesn't get his act together.

You have been unlucky re. the situation of your watchmaker and these things happen. Paying the guy upfront was a mistake though and as reported others are having problems. I suggest you bite the bullet and get your watch back. You will lose money but will have the watch and a lesson learned. Seems harsh but losing the money and the watch is a possibility. Of course it may turn up all fine and dandy but that's looking increasingly unlikely. Good luck anyways 👍

I agree but find it incredulous that the OP paid upfront, it's a different proposition from paying upfront at the first window at McDonald's, before you move to the next window to pick up the Happy meals and Drinks.

Who is the watchmaker? Surely you'd want to warn others?

We are not at that stage yet. I only spoke to him in late November and at that stage he was working on a huge backlog. I will let you know who he is when I unveil my restored watch as I have faith he will come through.

I think anybody who's read the whole thread knows who he is already... Still got fingers crossed for you, but it's getting silly now. Even late November was two months ago.

Massive delay + no contact/updates = Acceptable? I know every single client in the industry where I work would drop me for this.

Fingers crossed. I'd cut my losses and get the watch back, a service on a 1570 isn't something that is overly time consuming.

It takes a good watchmaker with correct parts on hand about 6 hours tops.

Swatch group serviced a watch that I no longer own a few years ago. Granted this was Pre-Covid. They had it done in about one month, and my card wasn't charged until the work was complete. Once I authorized the work, they asked for the credit card info, but again, I wasn't charged until the work was complete.

I had one of my wife's watches serviced a few months back by a local fella. Nothing fancy, just a movement service. Total time for service and back in my hands was less than a week. He even texted me pictures of the process. After he had it back together he kept it for a few days for testing, and that was it.

Less than a week. No money upfront.

Late november and no updates since then? And he has your money? Of course the customers that has not paid upfront get their watchs first... It“s a matter of cash flow.

I“d raise some serious hell to get prioritized.

How big can his backlog be? This has been going on for a year now or how long is it?
If things get out of control you probably stop taking in new watches to repair in order to deal with your backlog?

Props for the way you are handling this mate. So many hotheaded responses. I think most people nowadays live on the internet and want instant gratification. Yeah, the watchmaker should perhaps have been better with his communications but such is life. Very much looking forward to seeing the finished article. The waiting can be hard but it can also be enjoyable in a sense.

On a side note, this thread took a slight detour along the way when someone started talking about cycling. A few years ago I went down the custom bike route and ordered myself a nice handmade frame from England. The frame builder told me it would be ready in 4 months. Just over 18 months later it finally arrived. The quality was outstanding and although the wait was far longer than I had anticipated, it was definitely worth it. Over time the months and months of waiting fizzled away and now I’m left with a dream bike. I think you will find that the wait will be worth it with your watch.

Yeah, it looks like all the posts on all the TRF forums between the evening of February 6 and yesterday got trashed.

Just read this thread start to finish ... compelling story. OP - really rooting for you and that working tool watch that you are looking forward to reunited with. Love the 5513 ... had one once that had been completely redone with service parts. That didn't bother me since I had no tie to it, but it did look terrific (like a new 5513), but of course a lot here would say completely ruined due to WG surrounds, etc., but I did love wearing it. Long since gone now, but wishing you the best for yours!

As an aside, I'm now long since retired, but when I was in the Navy, I visited Melbourne in 1996 and then Sydney and Perth in 2001. Loved my time there playing golf and meeting great Aussies ... great people.
