Rolex are not haute horological so will not happen. Same as we will never see a Rolex tourbillon, minute repeater, decorated movements etc.

There are plenty of other brands that offer these and some are stunning, no need to just stick with Rolex if you want to venture into other complications.

It would be a mistake for Rolex, and one that a brand like Panerai has already made. When a brand is known for making basic, robust movements and tries to add split seconds, tourbillions, skeletonized movements; those models typically end up becoming either overpriced or less desired. Now with Rolex; people will buy anything they put out, but models with those complications will still get in line way behind the Submariner and GMT-Master in terms of desirability.

It took several years and stainless steel before customers really started accepting the Sky-Dweller. It never competed with the Day-Date the way Rolex intended.

If you mean the Sub picture I posted, it's a custom creation for Italian soccer star Andrea Pirlo. He commissioned the Geneva-based watchmaker and customizer Artisans de Genève to create it over a two year period. The article doesn't mention the price tag.

The Skeleton Sub is a beauty. I'm sure if rolex made a few as a limited edition, not going to affect the brand. Look at the rainbow Daytona for example. That's not something you would imagine Rolex doing back in the day.

The 15407 is a fantastic piece - but this type of finishing is not part of Rolex brand DNA in the same way as AP, RM etc.

Not so sure about a Rolex "openworked", but I bet a Sub, GMT or Daytona in ceramic would cause a feeding frenzy far beyond anything we've seen so far. I also think some of the "fluff" out there is rather nice:

There is a reason they don’t have a skeleton or gallery cases I suspect. They build their movements for function and whilst the finishing is better than lesser watches, it isn’t going to impress when sat next to an AP.

I sure hope Rolex reads this forum and takes some of these ideas under advisement. Maybe a skeleton sold online via a nationwide lottery system wait list at an msrp reflective of and equal to the anticipated grey market price...but in 36mm.

Because they are clearly headed for bankruptcy doing it their way.
