Collection Question
What are your opinions on having both the explorer 214270 and the submariner 124060 in a collection?
I know that they are phenotypically different watches but In the same thought, I struggle to rationalize them as distinctly different. Am I being too short sighted seeing too much similarity in the no date, black dial and silver indices ? Would love to hear your opinions; especially from those that have both. I have both. Love both. The more time you spend wearing them, the less alike they appear.

I have the explorer because I relate to it's history in mountain climbing; not so much for the sub as I'm not a diver.

Collection Question
I think a sub and an explorer are different enough to exist in a collection.
FWIW, I have a 126610LN and 116710BLNR and to the untrained eye they are similar. But I think they are very different and that’s all that matters.

Very different watches with different aesthetics that will both fit into a collection. Are you referring to both being professional/sport type watches?

I am happy with both in a collection.
They look and wear differently in my view. Two iconic pieces with no redundancy. |

Ah. I like the exp I on a strap option for variety in that scenario to distinguish it from the sub. I have had a few and lean toward the 36mm

The intended purpose of the two are different.
If you only want one “sports” watch then you may think that one is redundant. If you want to collect without duplicating styles then both are a nice addition sub = diver, explorer = field, so in that purpose of versatility in your collection, both are good! |

I seem to be hung up on both being black dial sports modes with sharp/popping silver indices coupled with both not having a date complication. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Your title should have been more like - the perfect pair. One has ceramic bezel, one doesn’t. I have the 124060, you can dress it up as well. Both can be worn in different situations. Love your collection.

How big is the collection?
If I were you I would be thinking about trading 2 for 1. You only have one wrist. That was my temptation when I had my first two Rolex watches (BLNR, SKYD SS). When I got my third I ended up trading it for a Daytona and I could not justify the No date sub when I had the BLNR in the collection. No date sub is super cool watch that I respect but there was no point in owning one if that meant leaving the BLRN idle. |

Your choice of words mischaracterizes their differences; this is horology, not biology or genetics

One’s completely an under the radar watch and basically no one will notice that it’s a Rolex.
The Submariner is less under the radar and is one of the most recognizable Rolex watches ever made. It also has a really neat timing bezel I say both can coexist |

Collection Question
Of course you can. But I’m not one to talk as I have several that are even more similar. Once you get past the feeling that every watch must be materially different and just buy what you like/want it gets easier. Most say these all look the same. But they are different enough to me!

Haha, wildly different watches.
Your asking a forum of people that many have 3,4, 5+ Subs in one collection. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I don't have either one and don't anticipate getting either of the two (they don't do it for me at the moment), but that is my preference. If you think they're too similar, then part with one. But that's only a question you can answer.

As someone who's a big fan of the Submariner and not the biggest fan of the Explorer I, I think they should exist within a collection. They are fundamentally different watches from a utility standpoint and the dial is different enough for me to resemble the different conditions you would use it under.

I think they can both exist, especially for a person who enjoys sporty watches. They certainly share DNA, with the dials and handsets. When you want heavy duty, wear the Sub. When you want sleek, wear the Explorer.
It's kindof like jackets. The Sub is like a heavy, repellant rain coat. The Explorer is like a breathable shell. Both from the same family, just excel at slightly different things. |

My choice of words does not change the nature of the question; which still rings to the tune that, to my eye, there are visual characteristics of both of these watches that could be viewed as too similar. Hence why I posed my thoughts and asked for feedback from the forum. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I agree with the comments already posted. My only observation is that asking a crowd of pro Rolex collectors it is natural to expect these types of responses. Asking someone who is not into watches is likely to give a different answer. I am a bit of a collector and would keep both as I do see them as different. End of the day the only opinion that matters is yours.

Honestly, even the dials are pretty different. In addition to the obviously different indices, the sub has a glossy, deep black dial. The Explorer has a more pale, matte black dial.

You can whatever ones you like in there. I actually started to trend towards multiple dial colours if the exact same watch personally. Don’t know where this will end up in the future maybe I will consolidate some at some point, not in a rush to move any though. Only obstacle is money ha.
