Sea-Dweller or Deepsea?

Gents,

I'm considering adding a Sea-Dweller (126600) or a Deepsea (126660) to go along with my black dial Explorer II (226570). I know the Deepsea is a beast, but I've tried it on and I dig it. It's bold, but would make a great change of pace to my daily driver (Explorer II). Conversely, the Sea-Dweller isn't quite as bold, but I dig the red text and date magnifier.

I've worn my brother's Submariner several times and it always feels too small for me. So one of these two should fit the bill.

Please share thoughts and pictures especially if you've owned any of these watches. If you have any pictures compaing them to an Explorer II that would be super helpful.

Both are great, but I'd personally go Sea-Dweller before the Black DeepSea, but I would get the James Cameron one first from all of those if I could.

Both are awesome pieces, however for me the SD43 gets more wear, the DSSD is a big too clunky for me.
I have the Polar Explorer II and that is one of my favorites, very comfortable piece overall.

I have the Sea Dweller 43mm, Deep Sea JC 44mm and the Challenge 50mm. Right now I am wearing the Challenge. It has definitely dominated wrist time among the three since I took it home from Mayors Jewlers shortly after it's release.

I was in a similar boat a few months ago: I wanted a dive watch (to actually dive with), and was waffling between the SD and sub. I also felt the sub was a bit small on my wrist and ultimately decided on the SD. I briefly considered the DS, but the SD was the happy medium for me.

I went with the SD and haven't looked back.

I *have* looked at a hulk a time or two, but only for the green face... :D

I've owned the 114060 Submariner - DSSD 126660 and now the 124060 Submariner. If I had to do it over again I'd buy the SD4K which is in the middle regarding case thickness--but needs to be purchased NOS or pre-owned--which I'm considering myself.

I would personally go for the Sea-Dweller, the Deepsea is a great piece of engineering but it’s not very practical

I only have the SD43 - so can’t give you an evaluation between the two - I but love mine - have had it for about a year. Comfortable and just enough weight to let you know it’s there.

I’ll preface my comments by saying , I like larger watches . When the SD43 was released I thought it was the perfect diver . I purchased one right then and still my favorite watch by far . Bought the D-Blue four years ago as what I believed was the perfect compliment. Never enjoyed wearing the D-Blue and sold it this month .

I like the Deepsea but prefer the SD43 which is the one I went for. I also own a 18mm thick diver (Breitling Seawolf) and I love wearing it.

So for me, there's no right or wrong. Maybe the SD43 is a tad more special, being the 50th anniversary.

If a Sub felt small on your wrist, go with a DSSD!

Thanks so much for the outstanding pictures. This helps tremendously! SD vs DSSD from the top doesn't look like a big difference. But for some reason, when you added the E2 it made the DSSD look huge.

I wear my brother's Sub every time we get together. We are twins, so it's sized perfectly. The size is fine, but the thin-ness always bothers me. Ironically, that's his favorite part of the Sub.

It's my pleasure, you're absolutely right the size difference between the SD and DSSD doesn't seem like a lot, however the biggest difference will be the thickness and the heft of the DSSD (its not the heaviest thing in the world, in fact very usable, however it's definitely thicker as well, and I do like the comparative lightness of the SD43 and thinness, again compared to the DSSD)
That all being said, the color palate of the DSSD is amazing.

I've bought and sold 50+ watches in my 10 years being into watches. I've tried to be a "watch guy" and I think I've learned I'm actually a "Rolex guy." I've also learned that I prefer bigger sports watches and that I have to always have an Explorer II.

The Explorer II is the easy choice if I ever decided to get down to one watch. But hopefully it never comes to that!

I'm wearing my Deepsea (116660) as I type. I love the presence. The fine adjustment on the clasp allows for spot on fitment that keeps the watch from rolling around on my wrist. When it's not adjusted properly, I find it it clunky and uncomfortable. Fitment is key. YMMV.

I have the JC Deepsea, and I love it.
I wear it everywhere…and it is currently my only Rolex.

There are definitely worse things in the world to be than the Rolex guy lol. Excellent brand, excellent choice. I do also love larger sports models, however I do recommend trying a Daytona as well, I have bigger wrists but that piece seems to be just right always.
The Explorer II is such a solid choice, one of the most comfortable pieces and beautiful as well.

I have the James Cameron deep sea,and the color variation of the dial from blue to black and the green deep sea logo matching the color of Cameron’s submersible is quite striking .
It always comes down to wear what YOU like 🤔
